speedo pimp

Post by Colin H F » Fri Mar 15, 2013 12:01 am

when I put my new home made speedo dial (conversion from K MPH to MPH) I could hardly see if when it was dark, so I decided to put some neon's round it for better illumination, I decided to just plug it into the cigarette lighter, as I didn't want to overload the dash lighting, but when I plugged it in it worked for a couple of times then blew the 15 amp fuse so I replaced it and the same thing happened again so I then tried it with a 20 amp fuse, blew that as well but what I couldn't understand was I had a 1.5 amp fuse in the plug-top which did not blow, so I have now fed them via a 1 amp fuse directly from the battery, with a switch on the dash, works perfectly now, see photos, not really as bright as the non flash photo suggests, so I am thinking now that it is the cigarette socket wiring that might be at fault, incidentally the lighter does not work.

Anything thats is blowing 15/20amp fuses is a dead short - even though you have set up an alternative I would be wanting to try and find that dead short -- that amount of current draw is a bit of a risk if anything else were to find that pathway!
