I'm going in to the garage tomorrow at 1pm to do a bleed with the mechanic.

I'll be studying those you tube clips tonight again.

I'm also going to take my thermometer and strap it into the funnel so I can monitor the water temperature.

Just so as I'm clear. The bleed pipe comes off the top of the engine block and so initially this water will get hot with the engine and won't be within any part of the radiator flow via the bottom hose. So once the water in the funnel gets to say 85 degrees I ought to be expecting the stat to open and have an effect. Could I reasonable expect to continue the bleed and get the temp up to 95 degrees or is this unlikely / not worthwhile?

nearly all the bongo.s i bleed open the stat then it closes again then tends to hover so in answer to your question it is very important to get the coolant temp well above the stat opening temps. when your happy the bottom hose is too hot to grip for 5 seconds or so then cap off the bleed pipe and replace the expansion cap then continue to raise the temps until the fans come on. the fans should be very difficult to get to come on, the best way is to get everything really hot by reving then let it tick over, the water pump then slows and the heat builds in the head triggering the fans on.
testing things up to the fans on, is testing the full stat range from opening to its lost control at the top end,

Thanks NB. More solid advice.

So, just to be sure, I should not expect the fans to come on until the stat is fully open at around 95 degrees?

It sounds like perserverance is the key.

I feel like its the night before an exam!
