knock in engine

Post by eribabongo » Sat Feb 16, 2013 7:00 pm

We've had a bad time with our Bongo, having only owned it for 5 months, sorry its a long story (long list of faults). The problems started with the wiper motor packing up, then the central locking, then a flashing glow plug light which was diagnosed by the garage as something to do with a vacuum valve and the turbo. The garage fixed this fault, it was still under guarantee. After the 3 month guarantee had expired we took car to another more local garage for cambelt to be changed. We havent had a lot of use of it since then mainly due to weather, but each time we did use it we were concerned engine was sounding louder. Today we set off for a longer journey when 20 miles from home the engine suddenly developed a knock and we pulled off road immediately, called the AA for recovery and have left car with local garage to check their work ie timing.
I guess we've been unlucky this time, we had 8 years with our previous Bongo, no problems, passed every MOT perfectly.
This car is a 2000 new shape diesel, looks the business, old car was 1995 diesel what a difference.
Would be grateful for any helpful info, we're feeling mightily fed up at the moment.

Hmmm, that's a sad tale, and not common to hear of diesel bottom ends giving up. That's assuming it has of course. Has the garage said what the cause is. Also, if it is major, would the dealer not recognise at least some responsibility and offer help in finding a solution. Whereabouts are you by the way?

We appreciate your interest, it is very disappointing especially considering the reliability we had out of our previous bongo, we are just outside exeter devon. I think my best bet might be Allans at Plymouth, I will be contacting him monday.

You should be in good hands with Allans. Good luck and keep us posted if you can. Once again, commiserations. I too have an early model Bongo that has been incredibly reliable. It's a disappointment when what should be better proves worse :-(
