High level brake light

Post by paramatt » Wed Feb 06, 2013 2:51 pm

Hi,
My rear spoiler high level brake light isn't working.
I've just checked the flexi-bit between the tailgate and body- and sure enough both wires were stripped- but not broken!
I've now insulated these but still don't have power to the lamp. I've traced back the wire down the rear pillar as far as the window sill level, but don't have power back here either!
This now makes me think there maybe a separate fuse which may have blown if the wires have shorted out- but both lower brake lights are working. Any other suggestions please???

The High-level light is F3-02 on the wiring diagram, and the next page shows the wiring looms.

The fuse covers all the lights so might be worth checking the earth connection which is number 11 (circle with 11 in it).

Thanks Geoff,
It seems the earth and live go back into the harness which I have traced back- so unless I strip all the interior panels off and keep following it back, I'm not sure where it is earthed.
I have used a light circuit tester direct to the body work and it appears I have no power to the live, therefore I am assuming it is the live feed that is faulty.
Would it be simplest to just use a live feed from the brake lamp to feed the high level lamp and earth it straight to the tailgate or body??

Matt, Certainly simplest to fix the light would be to take a wire from any other brake light, but I would be worried as to what has happened to cause a breakage/disconnection, what wire next is going to break ? If possible I would try to get to at least the X-09 connector, but the X-27 & 30 might be more difficult, the common connectors are at the back of the manual and the X-09 is here;

at least its easier to find the right wire so long as you can locate the plug/socket!

All sorted, thanks for your help Geoff. Turned out to be a simple case of bad earthing!!
