any need to use sealant on coolant hose joints?

does anyone use sealant when changing hoses to make sure a water tight connection is made?

going to be using constaint presure clips to be sure,not a fan of jubilee

I've used Hylomar blue gasket compound on a few joints where there has been some corrosion on the alloy or steel which may have prevented a good seal. It stays quite flexible and in my opinion can make the difference between dodgy joint and a good one.

Probably best to ask Fernox, to confirm that it won't react with antifreeze

I think the advantage of proper automotive jointing compound is that is resistant to oil and fuel. The Fernox stuff is silicone based so I would have thought would be fine for use with coolant, although a tube of Hylomar is only a few quid and will have been tested with all the relevant materials.

We have used sealant many times on corroded or problem hose joints, just make sure to clean the joint first before sealing.

I have some motorcycle sealant which is for sealing round rubber cable grommets etc in oil carrying engine cases. It would probably be ideal. It is usually supplied as an OEM part, mine is made by Kawasaki. Downside is it is over £20 a tube.

if you have ever removed an old hose that has been on for some time, it has usually self bonded to the stub,this needs to be forced off, would this bond be formed if a sealer is used between the hose and stub ???.

I was always taught to clean mating surfaces , and if there was a problem sealing, to address the problem. There should be no need for anything if a new hose is being replaced on a properly cleaned stub that isn't damaged. If there is damage, then that needs repairing. The large variety of "sticky stuff" on sale as a remedy is merely expedient...namely self-promotion, and possibly appropriate in a hurry. Regarding clips, I was taught to replace them. Mazda hose clips seem to be of excellent quality, and most certainly work well in the climate here, as there is commonly a difference of around 70 degrees C. between summer and winter, and coupled with the running temperatures in summer, they cope very well.

I have never (Normally)used any sealant on vehicle coolant hoses,if you need to use sealant you have a problem.I have on a few occasions witnessed coolant hoses with no clips,someone must have forgot to fit them,and believe it or not the hoses were not leaking.

Iam plumbing in a brand new heatexchanger for veg oil conversion ,brand new hose,brand new elbow joiner

Ive got 16mm hose going onto 16mm fittings and using constaint presure clips that grip the hose tight

the hose is a tight fit!

think maybe iam going ott with sealant....

Depends on how you plumb everything in...and a bit hard to say without seeing the fittings. Photos and or diagrams would be a help with fittings, but if it's not diverting the coolant in the wrong direction, there's no cause for failure if the principle and execution are sound.
Personally, I'm not "into" veg oil consumption for a variety of reasons, but if you want a quick and reliable heat exchanger without interrupting the cooling, what about using exhaust heat?....almost instantaneous, and rather easy to vary...send some details of what you need to do, and I'll ponder it for a while
