Conversion nearly done........

Post by mattbrum » Sun Jan 27, 2013 8:55 pm

So, after buying the Bongo last March, It's done nearly 5000miles, passed an MOT with flying colours and made it to Le Mans and back with ease! I've done a few bits, to it, but nothing unexpected. Cambelt was done as a matter of course. I fitted a new exhaust and did the pads all round.

I also fitted a Willington leisure battery kit, if you haven't got one and are wondering, its ideal and integrates into the vehicle electrics perfectly. I'll run a separate 12v feed to the rear of the van with an independent fuse box for some extra LED interior lights and the water pump (when i get to it)

The conversion was done, just to make getting in and going away easier. Everything on board when you need it. I think it also makes more of the space inside when its sole use is really for weekends away. The Bongo is an old one, and wasn't expensive, so wanted to keep the investment down, and do a tidy job without investing too much in it.

I'm rubbish with wood so I had the floor and units made by VW Camper Dreams, they were really helpful and understood what I needed to achieve on a budget, they made and fitted the units and I'm very pleased with the results. The fridge I bought of winchman was accommodated perfectly by them. They also kindly offered to cut the hole for the Smev when I get the additional funds. The electrics I wired in myself. Nice little consumer unit, Wilts own brand is cheap and ideal! Artic blue cable from the same place. I didn't want to cut the body to fit an external inlet so the cable passes through a gromit it the body to an inlet fixed to the underside of the chassis.

The bed was supplied by D and A Campers in Worksop, made to measurements supplied by the cabinet makers, really nice to see people talking to each other to make a busy life less busy (for me at least!). Dave kindly fitted it while I waited too, saves driving back to the midlands with it sliding around.

The double DIN Sony headunit is fantastic, touch screen and remote control for when you're sat in the back. The DVD player is really good and hasn't not once complained about some abused CD's and DVD's! Also got Ipod connection which I've run along the centre console so you can use it front and back easily. The two sunvisor screens I can take no credit for, they were installed when I bought the Bongo. They are pretty neat though!

Excuse the picture of the armrest, I couldnt resist, I recovered it in a bit of material scrounged from the chaps at VW Camper Dreams, what is amazing is I managed to do it without any creases or wrinkles!

A few photos below, if they work!

I keep toying with the idea of making one the same for my self, but I would make it removable, so when I go camping seats out about 30mins, then side conversion and rock and roll bed in, whats your thoughts

I think if you need it as a daily driver too, its a cracking idea. Having seen it in now, and removed everything I would probably have a crack at it.

Having the units to take templates from helps mind!

The bed would take a a bit of thinking though, you might want to think about bespoke fabrication to pick up on the existing captive nuts in the floor plan.

Thanks Matt
I can soon add a few captive nuts to suit, its cost that puts me off at the moment, could you give us some ideas of costs
Its a pity you are so far away as I could measure yours LOL

You need to fit one of these above the fridge to allow air to circulate

It can go straight above the door or in the worktop above.

Re costs, I'm not sure if I can post the ebay links to the people I bought things from, if someone can clarify I will.

Drop me a PM though and ill let you know.

Winchman, it has been thought about, will get it sorted when I get the cooker cut in :)

No links needed, just a rough ballpark figure of what you spent on the conversion,ie,rock n roll bed and the fitted units

Ballpark, and I've not totted it up properly.

Flooring, units, carpeting where needed and installing. Rock and roll bed inc upholstery and fitting approx £1400.

Savings possible on cheaper bed and upholstery though.

If you want any more info, just let me know :D

Cheers mat looks good - if i had seen winchmans fridges before i had bought mine it would look the same! did you insulate the van also?

Did not want to cut the wood so i open my cupboard door to get the sound when watching films in the back however you have sacrificed a useful cuttlery cupboard in it's place. I would not worry about getting smev units i don't think many people actually use them better to have a jetboil for cups of teas and cook outside IMO

good to see you got a good setup for good price (about what it would cost to do yourself)
Cheer Paul

BTW you might look at a telescopic curtain pole for the back - to hand stuff like a wardrobe or curtain or both
