Can I get gear lever out of park without ignition on?

Post by IanSheffield » Fri Jan 25, 2013 12:14 am

Hello all

It appears I have an immobiliser problem which is preventing us enjoying the benefits of the Bongo in the snow and I fear I may need to have it recovered by Green Flag to an auto-electrician for repair as Green Flag were unable to fix it.

It's parked up at the moment and the gear lever is in park position. I'm concerned that getting it dragged onto a recovery vehicle won't do it a lot of good with the wheels locked, so does anyone know of a way to get it out of park with the ignition not on?

Thanks for any help or tips
Ian

What he said :). There's a mechanical cable linking the ignition switch to the gear shift, so even if you have no power due to flat battery or imobiliser issue, put the key in and turn it to position II and you should be able get it into neutral ok. Remember to get it back to Park before trying to start it after the fault is fixed.

Now that is good speedy responses. Cheers folks will try it and see if I can shift it tomorrow. Luckily breakdown occurred only half a mile from home so able to leave it parked up.

I'm guessing it's an after market immobilizer.... If you know where it is fitted? Normally in the form of a relay wired into the starter loom..? you may be able to bypass it with a short length of wire with a couple of spade terminals attached connected to the "starter interrupt" relay terminal...? & get it to start..?!!

If you are getting the dash warning lights with the ignition on but no start? (due to immobilizer/interrupt to the starter loom.?) You could try pressing the foot brake & moving the gear to neutral...?

Just a guess....

Or "N" as it can be started there as well.

I have moved the gear selector without starting to test the reverse camera when fitting...

Yes it will start, but it could potentially be knocked into gear which would then prevent it starting (thus compounding the imobiliser issue). At least if it's in P, the interlock with foot brake would ensure it couldn't be moved unintentionally.

Find the immobilizer/starter interrupt, bypass & drive it as normal... Till the alarm issue is resolved..

With the utmost respect to Simon & Scanner... 8)

In fairness... I installed my alarm buried my immobilizer deep & developed (& tested) a contingency plan should it all go wrong... :)
