cold weather starting
Whats the best procedure for cold starting a 2;5 turbo diesel.my motor starts ok and idles at around 800rpm but it wont rev above 3000rpm. Just wondering if its finger trouble before i start ripping covers off
Re: cold weather starting
when cold on 1st start i let glow plugs warm up twice then count to 5 after light has gone out..no smoke ,works every time.
doese yours drive ok when warmed up?

can you describe better whats happening.tboy wrote:no it wont change gear or get above 3k rpm
what year is the diesel.
after starting from cold the glow plugs stay hot until a pre determined coolant/and gearbox oil temp, and go off if revved above about 900 revs, if you try to rev the engine when cold this turns off the plugs and makes the engine run rough until the temps are achieved.
it may be an idea to look at your gearbox oil, both level and quality. and check the coolant temp switch and coolant quality, and maybe fit some new glow plugs.
are the two cold start solenoids working as they should, by dropping the revs in 2 stages as the engine warms up from a very cold start.

Hi and thanks for ur advice. my bongo is a 96/97 2.5 TD AFT 4wheel drive Diesel.Auto.
van starts normally but idles at around 800rpm. After five minutes or so I try to rev the engine but it only reaches 3000k max. So if i put the van in drive everything seems ok till u need power. Auto box wont change and revs restricted to 3k and max speed is less than 5mph. the engine is running smoothly but is being governed by something. I also have two switches on the dash which i believe are to be used in extreme cold.i used them for the first time yesterday, but I dont know what they are called or what they do?

Re: cold weather starting
re "engine switches'..
if you have an engine symbol switch next to the on/off rear heater control, make sure it's turned off.
Sounds like you have the 'Northern' spec Bongo (same as mine). If this pre-heater switch is left on it can seriously affect power.

Problem solved ( I Hope ). Simply followed the hand book. Ignition on,Glow plug symbol off accelerator fully depressed engine starts then apply heater switch. Old girl seems to be back to health. i must have had a brain dump. Anyway thanks to all for your help and ideas. This is what makes being a member so good .Thanks
