Ah.... back to the brazing of a drain cock.....

Years back .. most auto boxes had a drain plug on the sump and on the torque converter ..

Now a days .. even draining the sump leaves a lot of old crappy fluid in the torque converter ..

how can you empty the converter (safely)?

Some remove the two oil cooler pipes from the bottom of the radiator start the engine and pump .. all .. the old fluid out while some one else re fills with new ..

would it not pump out into the sump? or is it really really bad to run it dry?

The Toyota Estima use a similar set up to the Bongo and this is an abridged system of how they do it ..

After changing the fluid in the sump (usually after removing / cleaning / refitting it) ..

Remove the pipe from the drivers side (off-side) bottom of the radiator (oil cooler) and attach a two-foot length of clear plastic tubing... (The oil is not pressurized and there wii only be about a cupfull of oil coming out) ...

Get a 10 litre plastic container ...

You will need someone sitting in the car to start and stop the engine at your command...

Have your helper start the engine and it will pump the fluid through the plastic tube and into the container ... (Make sure you hold the plastic pipe and point it into the bucket !!)...

The oil doesn't spray out fast but comes out at a reasonable rate.. the helper only runs the engine for about 20 seconds at a time ...

About 1 litre of old oil flows into the container ... then the helper stops the engine and refills the gearbox with a litre of new fluid...

Continue doing this until all the old oil is out ... and new clean / clear fluid begins to be pumped out...

Remove the plastic tube and reattach the oil cooler tube to the gearbox...

After a run .. re check fluid level
