Valve layout

Sorry if this has been covered or is obvious, but I've been searching for an hour...

I want to check Valve clearances, have felt happy with the "Tappet Adjustment" thread Triple/R started, but...
are the valves in a 2.5 TD set out as first 2 = No 1 in,ex; 2nd 2 = No 2 in, ex; 3rd 2 = No 3 in, ex; 4th 2 = No. 4 in, ex -or is there something more complicated in the layout?

Hi, the engine has 12 Valves......Inlet/exhaust/inlet.

Thanks very much Rita. I woke up this morning with my times table in my head, I had a vague memory that somewhere along the way 2 x 4 couldn't be four sets of three.

Now, perhaps I ought to count my spanners before I lose one in there...

Bah!!! I had imagined that if I put the car in low gear, I would be able to turn the crank with a push, as I've done before with my bikes. Not so! It appears to stay in neutral? I haven't got ramps to get underneath with big spanners, and I'm going to just put it off til another sunnier day...l

Hi,you could turn the engine by the cam shaft (hexagon)best to remove the heater plugs first.

That would put a lot of strain on the cambelt I would've thought. You can buy a 38mm socket for £10.99 from Halfords which will fit crankshaft pulley.

It was because I was already changing the glowplugs that I was up for this job, as well as wondering if she might run better without all that clattering... and I thought it'd be a doddle!
Even getting the cam cover off looks as if I need to be a contortionist! I'd rather a bike to work on any day...

If glow plugs already out, then it will be ok, although as mentioned, its fiddly to get cambelt cover off whereas crankshaft pulley bolt can be accessed from above and below.

HI Simon,most camshafts have a hexagon on the camshaft at the front(no need to remove the cam belt cover),it is easier using this as it keeps the job within range.
