wheel spacers for rx8

Post by Luke and Debs » Sat Jan 05, 2013 5:35 pm

hi all

just after some advise. have rx8 fitted and run 235-50-18 on them, notice a very slight rub on the inside when turning left. it rubs on the round drop arm. only small. i have a small wheel spacer fitted that was already on the old wheels but think i need a thicker spacer.

1. will this work to stop it
2. where do i get it from. does it need to be mazda spec or just any old one.

cheers luke

I wouldn't even consider fitting spacers on a Bongo  It's a heavy old beast and you would be putting more strain on the bearings.
As your tyres give nearly 5% bigger circumference than the standard tyres, just replace them with narrower tyres when needed - 215x50 would give a closer measurement and should not foul on anything.

I totally agree with John, I have run 18" wheels ever since I've had my Bongo and that'll be 8 years this summer. I have never had to use spacers and was advised as John stated, the van is tooooooooooo heavy.
I have run 245 45 18's for much of that time and I think this is the best option. However at present I'm running on 225 35 18's which I think is just a tad to low.

I would recomend the 245 45 18 tyres

245/45 are 14mm smaller diameter than your 235/50, which is probably why they don't rub 8)

yes that does make sense. but am not sure yet if it is the tyre tread or the side that is rubbling as 225/55 have a bigger dia than 235/50 and they so say dont rub. more investigation work needed.

also spoke to my mechanic up the pub earlier who advised that 5mm spacers should not add hardly any weight

cheers for the advise guys

if you fit spacers .. how will the wheels fit onto the 'lips' on the face of the hubs ...??

Bongos wheels are designed to fit on spigots on the hubs (spigot mounted) .. ideally they should they should not be stud mounted ..
