heater blower motor replacement

Post by belly_bongo » Sun Dec 02, 2012 3:03 pm

Hi

Sorry if this is done before =- tbh no time to search thru... :D

Our bongo made a nasty acrid smell thru heater channels and now the blower doesn't work

Is it an easy self replace job or a nightmare- any recommendations to a newbie?

its quite straight forward to replace the fan, however if it has seized up it might have blown the resistor/transistor pack that controls the speed of the fan. Its usually the bottom bearing that rusts up causing the seizure.
Its all basically a case of unbolting all the bits above the fan unit, then unplugging it. You may be able to release the fan and get it working again if its only just gone, but check the brushes also on the motor, they may need replacing if badly worn down.
Do a bench test on it to make sure its running free again, if it is then put back in situ and try it. If it will only run on setting 4 on the heater controls then the resistor pack/transistor will have melted one of the solder contacts and its time to repair/replace the unit. Is yours manual or climate control.

Dead simple! Easy to get at - open the bonnet remove the heater intake duct. undo three (If I remember properly) 8 mm bolts that hold the fuse box in place. undo the wire control cable unclip the electrical plug then 4 more bolts and the heater unit comes away. Likeliood is that the control box may need resoldering again very simple There is a fact sheet in members section. - As it is December you can access tatfor free.

Ady composed this recently. Did spenners a few days ago following these instructions. Once again, Ady strikes GOLD.

remove the air in ducting.
behind the rad is the wiring connector, unclip this.
2 bolts up against the bulkhead(behind the passyside cubby box)undo these.
4 screws hold the ducting down onto the fan top.
2 bolts hold the fan/case to the heater rad mount, remove these and lift out of the bottom slide fittings.
thats the fan out.
turn over remove 3 screws.
remove wire connection.
remove cover.(drill hole out to 10mm to stop it filling with water again later.)
2 screws hold end plate on motor, remove carefully, watch for the springs going boing.clean,service.lubricate.reassemble.
clean face of heater rad with soft wire brush, watch out for the jap dragonflies.blow out with airline or footpump.
sorry if ive left out the odd bolt here and there.its from memory, and im getting on abit.
should take about 1 hour to do the job.
its one of the nicer jobs that you can do on a bongo, you dont have to lay down in the rain, and you can have a brew while your doing it
