Brake Noise - Could It be CV joints?
Hi All - Ive got a strange noise coming from my from driver side front brake, its a intermittent grating/scraping noise at low speed and at the end of braking just before coming to a stop linked to the rotation of the wheel. Pads/discs all OK plenty of life in both and not warped, all bolts & mountings are tight and there is no sign of anything trapped in the pad etc, no wheel bearing play either so at a loss as to what its may be - is this anything giving sign of CV joint wear (as it only appears to be one side), not too familiar with 4x4 Bongos, both previous vans having been 2 wheel drive.

what wheels and nuts has it got fitted,is the wheel moving an the studs,are they tapered nuts that fit into the wheel correctly.ive also had damaged tyre/rims make weird noises on the rim as they rotate,weight on/off,

The only aggro I've had with shot CVs has been a clicking sound on full lock. Sounds like the problem may be elsewhere.

play in the lower ball joint? i've seen a damaged strut make a noise when it compressed slightly? loose top mount?

Co-incidentally, I have a noise which occurs on braking, not all the time, and only when slow at inching forward..also on lock....it started after hitting a pothole....and they don't take prisoners over here!...when it first happened, I thought it had broken the rack, but whatever it was moved back into place after braking twice...current suspects:...inner halfshaft joint, droplink, broken stabiliser, or bushing brackets...alternatively, cracked chassis, or rack damage...I've had all of those in the past on different vehicles...

I at last got around to looking at my mysterious creaking today (no not me, the Bongo!)...all bearings, disc, pads, bushes looked OK, nothing stuck in the pads etc, so I thought I take out the carrier slider bolts and on inspection they looked OK with no excessive wear, gave them a good coat of M/HT grease, torqued everything up to spec and bingo (bongo?) the creak has gone...only need to sort out the creaking on me now but thats down to too many years of running, cycling and paracuting...gona take a bit more that grease to sort that out me thinks

may not be the same but i have just had a similar interesting situation, i thought my front brakes were making a screeching grating noise from front offside, and it got worse every time i turned right ?, so i went flying in with a new set of front pads, but as i was changing them the ones existing looked quite good anyway, so i thought well ive bought them now so ill do it anyway, then went for a spin, same noise still there sounding louder by the minute and still sounded like the offside front wheel, so i found a realy quiet roundabout and kept going around it, still the same - untill, i opened the drivers door still moving and hung myself out the door (motorbike and sidecar style) and to my amazement the back wheel was making all the noise!, back home wheel off, the pads although with about 3-4mm of pad left had the little metal warning prong scraping the disc, i filed it back as a temporary measure to stop the noise whilst i ordered the new pads, fitted new ones today and all is well !
still cant believe how it sounded like it was coming from the front though.
and why it got louder turning right
i suppose as its the inner wheel turning slower it may have more of an affect on the springy thingy, great brakes now though

I have been working on vehicles for 50 years and I never get it right - wheel bearings etc - noisy on right hand turn equals noisy left hand bearing - except that it doesn't always work like that in real life. Nowadays I change both sides as I reason if one's going, the other side will follow. Goes for almost all suspension/steering parts. And as others have commented on this forum, sometimes it will be the rear bearing or whatever that projects the sound to the front. The lesson is, if you are going to run an old vehicle, look at the prices of spare parts. That's assuming you are running an old vehicle for price reasons and not for sentimental ones.MAZABON wrote:hi Mike-H,
