transmission oil leak

Hi,
I am a newbee to all this forum stuff so here goes.

I have a 2.5 diesel bongo p reg. It has a leak on one of the pipes underneath the drivers side, it looks like the gearbox to me. The pipe has corroded where it joins onto a rubber pipe. I think I can fix it myself but i am not sure if it is atf or not as its not red its light brown.
Also once I have fixed the piework do I just fill it up through the dipstick and if so what oil do i use I have been told to use dexron 2 but have also seen dexron 3????????????
any advice on this matter would be great

Welcome to the forum Alan :)!

Any chance you can upload a photo so we can see which pipe it is? There is a metal pipe just behind the drivers seat which goes to a rubber hose which tends to rust, but its for coolant rather than ATF. With regard to fluid, I use Comma AQ3 Dextron 3 from a motor factors. You do fill up via dipstick, but the fluid should not really be brown. Consider dropping the gearbox sump, cleaning the mesh filter and then filling with new fluid. Not a massive job if you're handy with the spanners.

the atf should be dexron 3, not 2. fill through the dipstick to the full mark with the engine/box warmed up,engine running and in park, if its brown it needs changing. it should be cherry red. the gearbox pipes come off the drivers side of the gearbox in rubber, then go to a twin steel pipe up the inside of the chassis rail to the front, then to rubber to the bottom of the rad. one is flow one is return.

the heater circuit pipe runs next to it from the rear heater unit to underneath the front heater unit, this could leak dirty brown if the coolant is old or the internals are corroded.

I will try and upload a photo at the weekend, I did check the level via dip stick and it did not register so hoping it is the transmission oil. Also there is two pipes both going to the sump, it is one of those that is leaking. I think I will take your advice and doing a full change.

Thanks for the advice I think I will do a complete oil change just to be safe, it is one of the two pipes that comes from the sump, but the oil is brown not red.

before dropping off the sump, the oil level should be higher than the sump level so may spill, drain the oil out by removing one of the pipes, the bottom one, as one goes in high up. then blow through the pipe to empty out the pipework and the cooler in the bottom of the rad .

Do I blow on the pipe going away from the sump. (possible silly question) :?:

yes but dont put your ear to the other/open end :lol: :lol: . sometimes you may need a footpump or VERY LOW compressor to clear the oil out through the cooler.

or stick a pela pump down the dipstick and suck most of it out first
