Electrical advice if poss please ?

Post by Gregf4393 » Tue Oct 23, 2012 8:20 pm

Hello , recently my drivers side electric window switch packed up , this resulted in me not being able to put the passenger window down either . I disconnected the cover to the switch and have been driving round with the circuit board exposed for a couple of weeks while I buy a replacement ( £180 new!!!!!) from e bay. Anyway I started hearing what sounded like a clicking noise when I started the engine, coming from the still connected switch ,so I disconnected it altogether. Since then I have noticed I have an intermittent problem with the windscreen washers and the front heater/ air-con unit . The lights on the heater unit go on and off . When on, the heater and wipers work ,but when off I lose the power to both . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated including and bongo friendly garages in Dorset . Thanks , greg .

Before dismantling the switch, did you check the wiring loom between the driver's door and the pillar? There are often broken wires (usually the thick black earth wire) that gives the symptoms you are referring to.

Clicking noises from the switch usually points to a broken wire in the driver's door harness usually where it is clipped to the door hinge.

When the heater lights go off could it be everything going off?(due to a dead short possibly?)

I would unclip the harness from the hinge and expose the wiring you will probably find it is in poor condition, it is a very common problem with the driver's door.

If you have the Slider type of heater control then the only common circuit point is the Earthing point for both the Wipers and the Fan in the heater/air con. they both use Earth points 1 and 2;

Otherwise nothing obviously common between the circuits;
