Ball Joint Help

Post by David Edwards » Thu Oct 11, 2012 2:51 pm

Well good news at last, the new engine is in the bongo and the garage say it is superb, however I need a ball joint for the front offside and am sure it was on here somewhere about a compatible match, has anyone any idea or how much they are for the bongo, cheers folks. My local motor factors say I have to buy the complete wishbone with ball joint at £191.90, is this right or can I just buy the ball joint itself for fitting.

Take this with a pinch of salt, because mine need done and I haven't done them yet.

Assuming you're talking about the lower (main) ball joint, not the upper track rod end, there are cheap (quality, not price) replacements on eBay for £50 a piece. Some prefer going for full wishbone replacement but that would be three figures. If you're confident the ball itself is not past its best but the rubber is cracked, then you can get compatible rubber boots to replace. However, the effort required to fit is probably as much as it is to replace the ball joints. Which in a garage, is probably going to cost as much as it would to replace the entire wishbone.

Always do them in pairs...? Anyone?

Why :?

They aren't brake discs or dampers or linked in any way, so no need to replace both.

Only thing to check is the condition of the arm itself as if you try and press a ball out and back in to a weak arm you may find it doesn't work out and the joint may be loose in the arm.

Thanks folks for the quick replies, most factors I have spoken to and even the super fast bongo clinic say it is a pig of a job to just replace the ball joint, in view of this I phoned the chap I bought the engine from at bongobits4u2012, lol and he is sending me out a complete wishbone and all bits, in (he says) damn fine condition, lol, now bearing in mind the engine he sent me the garage say is beautiful, lol I have ordered it, he is gonna post it in the morning, all for the grand total of 52 quid, awesome, his e bay shop is well worth a look, he has some amazing bongo stuff all at reasonable prices, I know I will be dealing with him again as the original garage have lost a few interior plastic bits. Once again folks thanks for the help, that's what our club special.
