Front tyres coming off rim

Post by bazandcaz » Thu Nov 16, 2006 10:31 am

We have had our bongo for 10 months now and on two occasions (once last winter and now 2 days ago) we have left our drive and within 5 yards a front tyre (a different one each time) has deflated and come off the rim. The tyre was not punctured.

We have the same size tyres on the front and back.

Has any had this problem or know the solution?
Thanks

I have had a tyre go down overnight on my Corolla, turned out to be corrosion at the alloy wheel bead seating area, letting air by. Maybe ?

Badly fitted tyre or deformation on wheel? Is it steel or alloy? My wife's Mazda had a tyre that kept deflating despite having a new tyre and valve fitted. Turned out to be a pin hole in the alloy wheel itself? Never heard of such a thing. A good tyre fitter would check the rim and wheel for imperfections for you.

Thanks ferdyb, veg_ian & csx355 for your thoughts/suggestions.

Here is a bit more detail. It has happened once only to each front wheel. So it seems too much of a coincidence that both front wheels have faulty wheel rims and why does it not happen more often.

The wheel is alloy and yes we do back off our drive which has a bit of a step down. Why?

I think we will get the rim and wheel checked for imperfections, tho my husband thinks they are Ok.

We have just got our Bongo 4wd and have noticed that when reversing on a tight lock it feels as if the front wheels have almost turned through 90' - virtually to the point of losing any turning effect. Strikes me that if you are almost 'dragging' the front wheels across the axis of the rims, if the tyre pressures were a bit low you could loose a tyre. Do you check your tyre pressures regularly. I don't - perhaps the tyres are coming off when the pressures drop over a period of time. Might be wrong but the effect would be accentuated if the drive was on a slope.

We have just had our tyres checked and it turns out that we have snow tyres on all our wheels. (It seems strange that it was imported from Japan! with snow tyres).

Apparently they are very much softer than normal tyres, for extra grip, and do not have some steel support inside. We have replaced the front two and will do the rest later.

So this could be the reason for the tyres coming off under certain circumstances.

Thanks to all for helping us sort this out.

Snow tyres are common in Japan, believe it or not they do get seriously harsh winter weather! :D
