Weak rear springs?

Post by oldfart » Tue Sep 18, 2012 10:35 am

Recently bought a 2.0L petrol Bongo and traded in my ageing 2.5TD. Generally very pleased with the van, however I have noticed that there are disconcerting "thumps" from the rear end when going over bumps, speed humps, cattle grids (a lot in my area!) etc. Also, it is possible to "violently" rock the van from side to side when standing inside. Does this suggest that the rear springs are weak or could it be something else? The van is now a 4-seater with a side conversion, and a high-top and a cycle rack have been added, but for a vehicle originally designed to carry 8 people I would not have thought that there is much overall weight difference. Sorry to be a bit vague - mechanical issues are not my thing!

I had a similar issue originally with our van. I was never convinced that the springs were 'man enough' for the job, I even wondered if they were original (as it turns out they are) I had some 'air assisters' fitted over a year ago (bought from Matt Savage), and they have transformed the ride..... no more hitting the bump stops and much better handling on corners etc. May be worth a try?

Regards

David.

These vehicles are known to be abit wallowie so a lot have fitted the air lifters to assist the springs and take away the wallowing, hope this helps

If you read my earlier topic on the forum re"bone Shaker" I had the same problem highlighted by the fact my suspension had been lowered, if you are considering air assistors you need to make sure you have standard bongo springs fitted, or the bongo assistor kit won't fit, you would have to order a smaller size

Many thanks to everyone who has replied to my query. Looks like Air Assistors are the solution to the problem.

I wrote a post just like this just after buying mine and the same thing came up, Air Lifters :)

I got them and I can tell you they have transformed the van, no more bottoming out, I can adjust the ride-level if she is fully loaded and the high speed motorway handling is vastly improved.

It's around £100 plus fitting so well worth it!

My garage made one change to the kit, where each lifter has a valve we put them together so they would always have the same pressure, plus you only need to pump up or defeat once.

PM if you need pics or more info.

My had them installed by a garage in Wokingham Berkshire and they did it very quickly.
