Just got an Cetek MXS-5, mainly so I can keep the charge up in the LB while I run the coolbox (the coolbox isn't connected to the hook-up circuit, unfortunately).
Tried it for the first time at the weekend and was rather alarmed at how hot the Cetek got. Is that to be expected? I presume the Cetek has some kind of safety cut-out but I didn't expect it to get so hot it was uncomfortable to hold.

Re: Cetek battery charger
Mine does get quite hot TBH when charging, and then cools a bit when fully charged and conditioning. Although, I wouldn't say it gets so hot it's uncomfortable to hold. That said, I don't really hold it as it is fixed in the drivers footwell.

Re: Cetek battery charger
Thermo electric coolboxes can draw a high current, the charger is probably working itself to death trying to supply it especially if the coolbox is plugged into a rear socket with standard wiring and its associated losses.
IMO If you have a 230V source for the charger it would be better to use it for the coolbox, even if it means an extension lead or installing an extra socket.

Re: Cetek battery charger
Typical coolbox is about 50 Watts which works out at 4.16 Amps while the charger is rated at 5 Amps (max), so if it's also trying to charge the battery too, I will be working pretty hard, so is likely to get fairly hot while in use. It will probably have a thermal cut out built in so is likely to shutdown if it gets too hot.
I've got a Waeco Mobitronic twin charger waiting to be installed which will charge both batteries at 45 Amps so will have tons of power in reserve to run any appliances required.

Whoa, that's a seriously expensive piece of kit Simon!
I think I'll just reconcile myself to only using the coolbox intermittently. Just wish I had the room (and cash) for a fridge.

It was a bargain from a boat jumble
. I think I paid less than £50, while the current model is over £450:

It's a big beast, but should fit under the dashboard above the passenger footwell.
