Hi .Can someone tell me what the tracking should for wheels?

Post by Gregf4393 » Wed Sep 05, 2012 10:25 pm

I've just had a new tyre today on my bongo and can't seem to figure out the tracking on the van .
The tyre had worn down considerably (front passenger ) on the outer side and I've had a new same sized one fitted to the front - same sized being manufacturers recommended size etc etc ....and tyre size seems to be a minefield in itself..... Anyway ,the guys at the garage couldn't find info for tracking and what I found somewhere on here said -1mm toe in and 7mm toe out , or something similar !
The guys at the garage questioned that saying it doesn't sound right !
What is the answer to this ? Many thanks , greg

Greg - there's a factsheet on the subject - one perk of joining the club. Having a little more time this morning to go looking, I have found references to parallel tracking by searching the forum, but I'd go with Simon's link - I trust him more than I'd trust myself.

The wheel alignment is 1 to 7mm Toe In.

Cheers.

set mine to 0 years ago and that works well.
if you have one front out just check for bottom ball joint worn (jack up and it may feel like a wheel bearing wobble, but its the bottom joint).

What you want and what you get is not always correct due to missuse of equipment, years ago I had a car set up on a 4 wheel laser alignment system. I couldn't take my hands of the wheel without the car veering to the left, drove it around the block back to the garage and got my money back.
What you need to understand is what when correctly set up toe in or out does.
Toe in is more stable in a straight line, how it or toe out works when turning depends on the ackermann angle (steering geometry). Toe out at speed can make the steering feel vague, but as it turns the inner wheel more in corners at low to moderate speeds it tracks better giving lower tyre wear.
I have access to a Dunlop optical gauge and as others have said I also set at zero toe.
