Rough start up/smoke.

Post by chiefster1976 » Tue Aug 28, 2012 8:42 am

Hi all... Similar issues have been said before regarding the above but was wondering if my diesel bongos symptoms are in relation..
First start up in the Morning the engine runs rough and coughs/white smoke everywhere..Like its struggling to idle..
Plant your foot on the accelerator and its revs higher and clears straight away, then choke will kick in and stay on for about 15-20 seconds..(Chokes noramlly in the past too)
Never had this problem untill i changed the oil and filter recently(same oil filter and used Castrol RX super diesel oil)
Maybe just a coincidence that??..
:o
IT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE if its 10 degrees in the morning going to work or as it usually is here around 22 degrees in the afternoon after work the car still has same problem.. :x :x .
I only have this problem if cars left overnight or all day at work!!!!
Allowing glow plugs on cycle 4-5 tiimes seems to help but still does it slightly hence my first thought on the glow plugs here :!: :!:

1. On first thought im thinking the glow plugs..I have just purchased new ones as they are pretty Cheap(got the NGK brand)
2. Maybe possible cold start selonoids?
3. Blank off EGR??

I have to take off the rocker cover anyway to replace the rocker gasket as shes leaks pretty bad.
Im replacing the glow plugs at the same time and ALSO i have the dreaded screaming noise coming from definatly the near side..More investigation needed but from what ive read probably the Exhaust manifold gasket but not sure!!

1. Is there any pics available for the testing the cold start selonoids?Process?
2. Should i be repalcing the rocker head bolts as well as the gasket and bolt gasket rings?
3. EGR blanking? Dont want to make extra work if it doesnt really need doing!!

thanks for your advice in advance!!

Hi
I've heard that unless the plugs are NGK or Denso, then the cheaper stuff does not agree with the engine, and causes problems like you describe......The screaming could be manifold stud, or maybe turbo clamp broken....BUT...hosts of other items can give a Scream-ish sound
Cheers

try this.

the last few pages of this.

and this.

the rocker cover gasket maybe reusable, remove the rocker cover bolts and the tubes and grind 1-2mm off the length of the tubes, this pulls the cover down tighter, use gasket sealer over the front cam bearing.
the egr blanking is a good thing to do as it is not ness for uk emissions, but maybe needed for your testing.
ive also removed the crankcase/rocker breather from the air inlet pipe, so it now gets all fresh cool air to breath in.

I'm all for re-use & recycle etc, but for £13.50 delivered you can get a new rocker gasket & more importantly the seals that stop the oil leaking from the bolt holes (which you can't easily fix with gasket sealer). Rubber that is 15+ years old & in contact with oil & extremes of temperature is going to pretty knackered.

Tend to agree. Isn't there a risk that if you grind a bit off the sleeves, the rocker cover may suffer overstressing when a new gasket is eventually fitted and bolts tightened?

Also check the cold start idle is correctly set, if it's set to high ie above 950 rpm the ecu will turn the glowplugs off as soon as she fires up as the ecu will think the van's being driven, with the engine stone cold Lift the drivers seat and turn the ignition on so that the dash lights come on you should see the cold start mech activate towards the front of the engine, turn ignition off and undo 10mm lock nut wind adjustment screw right back till it's level with the front face of the cold start mech, turn ignition back on let glow plug solenoid click off and start van, if she starts fine then wind the adjustment screw in until she's at 900rpm then tighten the lock nut.

Interesting read M8ongo on page 3, however with your problem, quote;;
''She starts fine and idles fine its only when the cold start kicks in and the revs try to rise that she starts missing and chuffin out unburnt fuel but if i raise the revs to 1300 on the throttle for a couple of seconds she's as good as gold.'' end quote.

My problem however is the opposite to your problem..(same same but different)
Mine coughs and splutters from the FIRST intial start up from the first start of the engine..Its only until i rev the engine she will clear and THEN the cold choke will kick in normally as it always did from cold and runs A o.k from that point....
Im not a auto electrician but willling to learn.lol.. :)
If my bongo was starting from cold and idling fine before(and nothing has been taken off or replaced) it tells me something electical, sensor, glow plugs or some sort of other machanical issue has arisen, hence i shouldnt need to adjust my cold start selonoid adjustment screw should i??
maybe the selonoid has just given up..lol..
i would love to try the easiest first and adjust the cild start idle before cahnging glow plugs but has nothing has been removed or replaced i feel this wouldnt work.. Correct me if im wrong here, like i said im no auto leccy.. #-o

Is it easier to remove the full gearstick/engine(saddle) cover area to replace the rocker cover gasket or easy enough
to replace without removing them? What are the correct torque settings/arrangement? seat and then criss cross pattern to specified torque?
No gasket goo Required???
