Brake pad clip

We've had a clicking noise from the front of the van on the offside when braking and going over bumps at slow speed.
Initially I thought it was the brake pads moving in the caliper but all seemed solid.
Next thought was the rollbar bushes so I changed them and the drop links while I was at it even though the old ones hadn't got any play but seemed a bit floppy.
Still had the clicking so checked there was no play in any of the suspension. Nothing there.
So bought a new set of pads from EBC and changed them.
On the passenger side on the outer pad is this little spring clip which obviously keeps the pad tight in the caliper.



Nothing on the drivers side so obviously this was the problem, fortunately the new pads came with new clips so after putting them on both sides the noise has stopped.
There is no mention of this clip in the manual so given that one was missing completely I'm not sure if they should be on the inner or outer pad or perhaps it doesn't matter so long as they are there. Does anyone know for sure which pad they should be on?
Expensive fix for a small problem.
So make sure these little beasties are fitted if you change the pads.

they are tuning forks brian, they make a scraping noise as the pad reaches its wear limit.
the clicking you have noticed is poss down to the pad locators worn, or made slightly too small, or some of the stainless sliders missing from the caliper pad seats.
several of the cheaper branded pads do this clicking as they rock forward with the rotation when applied.

they seem hard to get hold of,--------------------but.


did you strip them all out and clean them up, and the caliper pad face that they clip onto, there should be one at each end of each pad, 4 per caliper.

Spot on.... old fashioned wear indicators before they started using stupid wires which break....
Works well when a vehicle is serviced to schedule.
I have seen somewhere recently ( can't remember where just now) all the springs and shims as a kit for the front brakes..... don't forget the copper grease on the brake pad backs and shims on reassembly as per the manual...

Yep, all stripped, cleaned and copperslipped so hopefully OK now, certainly got rid of the clicking anyway.
