FRont heater fans caputt.

Post by chiefster1976 » Sun Jul 15, 2012 12:44 am

Hi guys..seen a few posts regarding heater fans being intermittant on some digital systems..
I have the old type twisty dial arrangement on my 1995 bongo..
At first the fan speed on 3 and 4 seemed as fast as 1 and 2.. I know it wasnt right as ive had a few bongos now..
Now the fans have stopped working all together..
The A.C has been working fine and the hot cold was/is working fine.. Just fans...

heard something about a resistor or fan pack..Is this a stripe down jobby and refit or have to replace parts and are they obtainable? thanks...

on your early type its a strip down and solder back together job.
the reason the resister goes is because the fan bearing or brushes are faulty, this again is an easy strip down and fix.

usually the lower fan bearing seizes and causes the overheat, strip it, 3 philips, drop unit out the bottom (would be funny if it wasnt so tricky, imagine its funny to watch tho!), 8mm nut removes the fan blades, iirc 2 philips and the whole motor unit comes apart, the lower bearing is usually seized onto the shaft so it comes off with it and getting it back into the base can be a pain in the backside too, clean shaft and bearing off, grease and re-assemble, resolder the resistor and should be good as new :D

Thanks guys..gotta love this forum!! =D>

My auto sparky mate, testes the fans on each speed. He said the top speed the fan bypasses the resistors..
looking at it the fans spins by hand.. He put direct power to the fan and nothing, so hes saying its the fan itself and not the resistors.. But im guessing if its an easy strip down as your guys say i should renew the resistors anyway or just a clean up/resolder? Renew bearing or clean up? thanks..

If the resistors are OK leave them alone! The "fuses" are heat fuses that rely on the solder melting, however its quite possible that the solder used is a low temperature type rather than standard 60/40 solder, hence its better NOT to play with them or if you have to because one has blown then try to reuse the solder rather than use any new stuff.

Had the same problem on mine today ... followed the threads and the factsheets on the fans, heaters and fuses. After stripping down I found the blocked drainage hole had caused the motor to be waterlogged - drying it out, some wd40 and lubricating the bearings had the fan working again. Excellent fact sheets and information...thank you all very much

Got the fan apart today..Well its fully covered in gunk and red dust(this camper has been used in the RED dust of the northern terrritory of Australia by the looks of it)
Been looking in the members section...
I read the fan resistor section and is helpful. I was looking in the Front heater problems also..
That section shows:-

''The relay is one of two, which sits on the left of the battery on the left-hand side
of the vehicle when you're looking under the bonnet. Mine were hanging loose
there but some may be bolted to the bulkhead either on the wing side or at the
back behind the battery.'' End quote.
COULD it be the REALY instead of the fan motor here as most people have just mentioned the fan motor/resistor pack and the heater fuse??

Also there is mention of an airlock in the heater system may be possible.. Is this only if your heater temperature has failed and nothing to do with the resistor/fan motor/fan speeds?

The circuit for the Manual controls is here;

Yes it could be the Relay or the 30 Amp fuse, the location of the relay is shown on the next page, hover over the green fuse icons for locations etc.

Hi all. Got the fan working again sweet!!! =D>
Turns out looking at the little brushes that they were worn down big time..Hence and good clean up, degrease and lightly
wet sand the dirty and rusty bits, replace the Brushes(the bits that connect to the soldered wire) and hey presto good as new!!.
The Fan on this twisty dial heater controls type dont seem to be as fast as my bongo with climate control ,but hey
its all working now and gla i didnt have to replace the whole assembly...
Thanks fellow bongoers for the advice with the fans etc..Gav.. :D :D :D

I did mine some time back. The thing that really improved the fan efficiency (and killed the mildewy smell too) was picking all the crud out of the heater matrix where the air gets drawn through it. It's a slowish job and you need suitable picking tools, and I think part of the grid may have been a rotted fabric membrane, but by eck the fan blew a lot more air afterwards. I suspect it reduced the backload on the motor too.

Where did you buy new brushes? Might buy some spares myself if I knew what to order and price was reasonable.
