help. new owner, im going mad,

Post by nickitams » Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:27 am

can some one please help me.

My ford freda drives perfectly around town but when i go out of town i have a problem. A big problem since i live out of town.

She goes through first second and third normally and then also seems to engage the overdrive at the correct time.

However less than a minute after overdrive/lockout is acheived the revs jump by about three/four hundred rpm and the engine gets louder. (not like its dropped a whole gear but definitey louder)
i find that by the time i reach 50mph i can be doing 3000rpm.

This doesnt seem right.Is it?

i hope i have explained this well enough for someone to help. This is driving me batty. : (

Have you checked the gearbox fluid level?

(Dipstick under the driver's seat, checked in D, handbrake firmly ON.)

As well as the level, check the condition / colour / smell of the fluid. It should be clear bright red. If it's dark, smells of burnt toast or worse is at all gritty, you need to get it changed ASAP.

hi

well i took it back to the place i bought it from and he said he checked the gear oil and it was at minimum so he added i think he said 3/4 litre. ill check it again myself, also the colour.

he also said that she was driving normally but i dont believe that is true. it just does not seem right to me.

if this is normal then it is not a problem to me i can live with it. im just worried that this sort of performance is going to be detrimental and cause breakdown if its not addressed.

he said that bongos are very high revving but from what i can gather from reading posts on here that is not the case.

to be honest i dont think he has had much experience with the bongo/freda.

she is a 1995 4wd 2.5 td, green if that helps lol

Hi
It might help if you add your location to your profile then if there is some one local to you they may pop over or meet you to see if they can help.

It's also worth putting your location in your profile. There may be a local forum / club member who can go for a test drive with you to confirm if you have a fault or normal behaviour (It does sound like a fault to me)

IIRC, 3000 rpm is more like 70 / 75 mph in top.

Is your hold light on at all?

Have a search on here for TPS ( throttle position sensor ) as this is part of the system that determines when the gearbox changes based on how far you put your foot down. Also someone else has an issue with engine revs and performance which may be of interest:

I would also go back to the place you bought it from to see what else they suggest. If its not right, then they need to rectify it.

Sounds like a slipping clutch or the TPS has a faulty track.
