Main headlights don't work
I had a problem with my sliding door recently and took the fuses out to check them. Came to drive at night recently and I realised I could get side lights and main beam but not normal full headlights. Any ideas bongo experts? What do I do first?

Possibly a fuse, according to the fact sheet http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... usebox.pdf, number 3 (30A) covers 'headlamps' but doesn't specify dipped or main beam.
Re: Main headlights don't work
The only fuse in the Headlights circuit is;

versions pre 1997 the switch operates the lights directly, post 1997 then there is a relay E1-04, nearside wing rear;

Have you checked the bulbs themselves and the holders ?

Re: Main headlights don't work
I have checked the fuses and swapped then over and no joy. I'm no t really sure what I am looking for with the bulbs and the holders? The drivers side light seems to have a loose red wire, any ideas where this goes? Also I couldn't even get to the other lamp-couldn't get the rubber seal off...
Sorry I'm totally new to this and not rea
dy sure what to do so any help would be great!

Get down to wilkinsons and get two new bulbs then if you can fit them up, if you can't fit them and have breakdown cover call them out and get them to change the bulbs over, option 3 ( most expensive ) get to a halfrauds and get them to supply and fit the bulbs.Bodiebongo1 wrote:I have checked the fuses and swapped then over and no joy. Hi,before you start buying unnecessary parts,I would get this red wire checked out,if you are not competent yourself I would go to your local garage/auto electrician.Bodiebongo1 wrote:I have checked the fuses and swapped then over and no joy. Re: Main headlights don't work
The actual lamp holders are known to fail on occasions with over heating, its possible that this is where you can see the red wire from. I believe its quite a simple job to remove the grill to give access to the lamp, the grill is only held in place with a couple of clips, others can confirm this I think ? If the holder has failed then its not a difficult or complex job to replace at all the H4 holders are available from the normal places. Yes see this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 95#p553795

Re: Main headlights don't work
Front grille on pre-'99 models is held in place with one cross head screw at the top / centre and 5 spring clips which are released by pushing down on the centre lug. Later grilles are a bit more fiddly (or at least seem to be when it's dark and cold)

Re: Main headlights don't work
. . . . I have no idea why it worked but I removed the front grille , reomved the screw above the nearside indicator and pulled the indicator unit away from the headlamp which exposed two bolts secruing the headlamp unit (so the headlamp unit is held by two bolts each side = four bolts total). Having removed the four bolts I pulled out the headlamp unit so I could see the moulded connector/rubber seal arrangement and found I caould disconnect the connector then remove the rubber seal and the headlamp unit was now in my hands. I put a meter on the connector and operated the headlight dipped and main beam lever and found of the three connections; the inner (nearest the grille) is the supply for the full main beam; the top horizontal connector is the supply for the dipped beam headlight and the offside outer connection (nearest the wing) is the return. My moulded headlight connector had melted exposing the return wire though only the moulded connector had melted not the wire which was OK. I used the meter to check the headlamp and all filaments were intact so I groaned thinking if the supplies are there and the filaments are OK then a relay must have died. Fading light stopped play so I put it all back together and it all worked ??sohappy wrote:Hi, I also have this problem and am hoping you found the cure ! could you post/Pm to let me know P L E A S E , school holidays and we are grounded , Thanks
