2002 Bongo cutting out/stalling and struggling to start

Post by pollywiggle » Tue Jul 03, 2012 6:03 pm

Hi fellow bongoites.

Any help on this problem would be much appreciated. I have a 2002 Bongo diesel with about 100000 miles on the clock. Over the last couple of months starting has been getting increasingly more difficult, switching from starting on the button to taking a good few turns to get it going.

The other day I pulled up to a junction and it cut out completely. On trying to start again there was a lot of effort needed and when it fired up it was lumpy and slightly lacking power. This worked its way out after a few minutes of driving.

It then did the same thing again at the next lights. This was all after a good 45 miles run beforehand so the engine was warm.

More generally I've noticed that it doesn't like starting when it's been left out in the sun (yes, sounds bizarre but true).

I've had it into Andy's Imports near Norwich and he has checked glow plugs, fuel filter and fuel pump and all seems well. Only other thought was a sensor of some sort that doesn't like the heat, but as I'm new to my bongo I don;t know it too well.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Try removing the fuel cap and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Martin

Sorry to here your woes. I'm no expert and others here can, I'm sure, advise better, but your experience rings very similar to my own ended up being the fuel pump.

My Bongo (97 2.5 d) is looked after by Adrian at Japan Direct in Bury who has a very good name here on the forum. With mine, diagnoses went on for weeks but Adrian's approach seemed to be that he couldn't really test the fuel pump and so he ruled everything else out first.

In the end, refurbishing the fuel pump did the job - and did a job on my wallet but at least it's fixed!

I'm not sure if any of that's any help, but good luck anyway.

Christopher.

Fuel pump front seal, its not uncommon on the later shapes, as suggested drive witout your fuel cap in,its a temporary fix but will keep you on the road

thanks for tips everyone! I'll try driving without the fuel cap on and see of that makes a difference.

Andy at Andy's imports had a good look over the fuel pump and was doubtful that was the problem. It feels to me also like it could be that the tickover has dropped. Once warm and when stationary it ticks over at just under 400rpm, and feels to me like it's struggling a bit. Anybody ever had experience with tickover on these?

thanks

when cold it should tick over at just under 800-1000rpm, as it warms it should drop a little depending on how its set up as it can be adjusted.
do a search using the tab on the top right and put in---- cold and start and solenoids.
these act like a cold start choke whilst its cold. you may find one or both isnt working or the vac supply isnt getting to the fuel pump, maybethe little pipes are broken off.

have a read here.
