speedo cables

Post by jutwit » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:26 pm

does anyone know if speedo cables are a standard universal size that goes into the back of the speedo, my ren van speedo has stuck at 20mph but the miles are still working and with the mot coming up and thats now a failure and was thinking of just putting a bike or kit car dial in somewhere instead of messing about with the clocks

They have a 'flexible cable ' speedo drive as they are electronic ..

Instead of fitting MPH dial covers some people use a 'speedo chip converter' which can be problematic ..

sounds to me like when someone has changed the speedo face, they have put the needle back on without the clocks connected and the ignition on, which means when they turn the key, it jumps to about 20mph and maybe killed the gubbins when they levered the needle off?

As said above the speedo is electric so no cable to remove it there are 4 screws in the facia then 4 more holding the unit in.

If there is a chip in the cabling behind try removing it and see if the speedo works if so replace the chip or just replace speedo for one that does not need a chip (from a 626/mx6 mid 90s)

which will show in mph and the odometer will tick over in miles.
