Few questions on transfer boxes

Post by sunnyjim82 » Sun Jun 10, 2012 8:16 pm

My transfer box is knackered, would prefer to rebuild mine as buying second hand is not always guaranteed my questions are;

Can these be rebuilt?
Does anyone know someone around Hampshire who could do it?
Can I remove it and blank the part to the gearbox so still drivable, does it come apart from the box or is that a stupid question!?
Would it be cost effective to do it?

if its been built it can be rebuilt  .
any good gearbox shop should help. you would need to swap the gearbox i think if you want to run without the transfer box, unless it uses a closure plate. the 4w drive prop is also shorter so you would need a 2 wheel d prop.
it does split from the back of the box, and has its own oil independent of the gearbox.

why whats wrong with the one you have ?

Thanks for your reply ;)
At first when I bought the van it made a whining noise like an old jeep!differential was knackered so changed that the noise went but the wheels were winding up and skidding along the road mainly when I was turning, they were different sizes so bought new wheels and tires and made sure they were all the same rolling circumference etc and still the same problem so took out the front prop and driving fine now in 2wd so to my understanding the transfer box is pooped! However I would like the 4wd back :(
But don't want to buy a second hand part and risk that not lasting long either if it has also had previous abuse.
If they are a viscous coupling/fluid mechanised would changing the fluid resolve the problems at all!?or is that a bit wishful?

you cannot change the fluid in a vc.
all bongo 4wdrives will drag wheels when you turn very sharp corners.
go on you tube and put in how to test a vc, you will see how to jack wheels up and atatch a weighted bar to a wheel nut and time the amount of time it takes to rotate, the faster you try to turn it, the faster/more it should lock up.
this is why you notice it dragging wheels when turning out of a T juntions etc, as it thinks you are skidding as certain wheels are turning faster than others, so it locks the vc ---as it should.

You don't say if it was front or rear diff you changed. If the rear diff is of the limited slip type they do skid & judder, much less so with the front propshaft removed. Mine has always done it & it was much better when I ran it with the front p/shaft off for a while last year.

I have a 2nd hand transfer box here from a 2.5 diesel if that helps.

It was the front diff changed: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... hp?t=55057

I've found both 2wd and 4wd do scrub a bit round tight corners, although the 2wd is perhaps marginally better.
