Inlet manifold gasket

Hi All,

How big a job is it to replace the inlet manifold gasket? It's leaking oil

I've only had a quick glance but the mainfold seems to be pretty inacessible from under either driver or passenger seats. Don't tell me it needs the engine dropping.....

Are you sure its the inlet manifold. There is quite a bitof gunk comes out of the egr system? If you can let us see the mess/leak others may be better able to confirm your diagnosis.

The difference in cost will be substancial.

FYI
You can unbolt the black metal central unit (between seats above engine) to gain better access to engine. The members fact sheet on glow plugs has a step by step guide. 1 bolt is hidden under the gear shift lever unit.

its not a horrendous job but it is quite involved,lots of bits to get out of the way to get at it

Actually it is quite easy....I had no problem at all with this .....helps having 1/4 & 3/8 drive tools though. I call the centre consol thingy a "Saddle" as that is what it looks like.

Looks like the oil is coming from the cam cover to me....very unlikely from inlet manifold.....

Most Bongos seem to bleed oil like that. Mine didn't use oil between services, but was filthy.......I've just done the cambelt,and put a new rocker cover gasket on, and put plenty of hermetite on the the blanking plates for the EGR, and the elbow on the inlet manifold, and, hey presto....no leaky marks....so, I guess you could try the same...Gasket in Club Shop comes with all the little seals for the bolts on the rocker cover...it makes a nice afternoon's job, and saves you from gardening.

The pics that you show are of the EXHAUST MANIFOLD.....

As has been said it looks more like the valve cover is leaking.The best bet is nip up the set screws give it a good clean,and monitor it.

Looks like I should have ordered a rocker cover gasket instead of an inlet manifold gasket.

I'm going to ask the mechanic to diagnose exactly where the leak is from first. No point paying him to fit a part if it's not the one faulty.

Failing that, I'll live with it.

The exhaust manifold is as the bottom of the pics, unless i'm going mad. Most of the oil is along the seam where the valve cover joins the engine block.

The two photos are the Exhaust Manifold (Passengers Side) the Inlet Manifold is on the Drivers Side.

Make sure that you get the rubber seals with the valve cover gasket.

OK I've had a look on the driver's side.

The worst leak does appear to be on the inlet manifold, as the mechanic said.

There is a smaller stain all around the the valve cover seam (would that gasket be the rocker?) but think I can live with it.

There's also some leakage at the rear of the engine block (what would be there?), at around the height of the valve cover/engine block seam.

I don't think any of this is too serious - the Bongo's been sitting in the same position for four days without any oil appearing on the ground beneath it.

I guess if I had the time, ability or money I'd replace all the gaskets, but I don't.
