Not necessarily with a fully synth oil, as the original Mazda change interval only applies to 1990's spec straight mineral oil. Fully synthetic will last much much longer.Driver+Passengers wrote:Time for a change, then...P-Med wrote:In the end I went for a 0W/30 fully synthetic oil (Car Lube Triple R 0W/30) and I've just driven 4500 miles on it without any problems and without losing any oil.

Re: engine oil
Fair point. I think Ady has racked up the miles too after a confident choice of oil. Muz, however, with his 40-odd oil changes has averaged pretty much bang on the 3000 mile mark.scanner wrote:Not necessarily with a fully synth oil, as the original Mazda change interval only applies to 1990's spec straight mineral oil. Come to think of it... I'm overdue.

Re: engine oil
Yes, according to the 3000 miles service interval. But, this oil would probably last 20,000 miles, so I'm not really sure why it would need changing? I think I'll ask my mechanic what he thinks!

Re: engine oil
I feel you should use what Mazda reccomend, the engine was possibly designed to run on mineral oil which can be difficult to find now.
I use semi synthetic as I feel fully synthetic isnt worth it in such an old engine.

Re: engine oil
That might hold IF Mazda could have specced modern oil but didn't - it couldn't, so it couldn't.winchman wrote:I feel you should use what Mazda reccomend, the engine was possibly designed to run on mineral oil which can be difficult to find now.

I agree that higher spec'd oil should/will last longer. What about the filter?

Re: engine oil
An experienced (old) mechanic I know who is amazing with vehicles has always used and recommended Lidl's oil, he said he used to use in in germany on army vehicles, when they could get it as the germans always bought loads of the stuff, it is all he uses here now and to be fair I have used it for years, no problems at all. It is also priced good enough that does not sting when it is changed every four months or so.

Hi all,
I just bought some 5w - 30 fully synthetic castrol
Magnetic for my 97 diesel. Is this going to be ok
To run on? It says petrol and diesels on the bottle.
Thanks.

Re: engine oil
Yep that's fine..... there are plenty of oils out there now plenty good enough for Bongo's..... and labelled own brands but produced by Comma or Car Plan (Tetrosyl) - As most have said Semi Synth is great now....most of the 20,000 mile interval cars these days use Semi.....lancyman wrote:Hi all,

I use semi in most of the Classics I have in but sometimes I have to grab a 20/50 mineral for certain ones..

The stuff that we once used in the Classics was BP Visco Static,(Classic oil)
Re: engine oil
Only one oil describes itself as "Liquid Engineering".
That could be an important consideration. Some of the others might only be liquid technology.
