engine oil

Post by cavey » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:11 pm

Hi gang. Does this look like suitable engine oil for a 2.5 TD? It doesn't mention turbos.

Hi, my first reaction is to say stay away from mineral oil. You need to find a 5w-30 diesel oil, Halfords do it as do local motor factors. I'm currently using a semi synthetic as do lots of people. I'll just have a read up on mineral oil.

Or 10W40. I'm not very well clued up on oils, but I believe 10W40 is recommended and that many also use 5W30, especially in the colder months.

Ok just read up on oils, the reason to use a diesel oil is that they have more detergents to hold the sulphur(by product of diesel ignition) and other contaminates in the oil for longer before breaking down. The handbook states 5w-30 oil for the diesel Bongo so that's what you should be looking for a 5w-30 diesel engine oil.

Not any more, modern derv is so "Ultra low sulphur" it's almost unmeasurable.

Ooh didn't read that one....the one time I put standard oil inthe Bongo it went black really quickly, less so with diesel oil. Wonder how mineral fares

5w 30. or even 5w 40.
but use one designed for your engine, there are loads of these 5w 30's around, but not all are suitable.
when i contacted millers oils technical department, they recomended millers xss semi synth, expensive but i wont tell you how long ive had it in, so, to me money well spent.

Thanks for the tips, but I thought it was supposed to be 10W30 in the diesel Bongo and 5W30 for colder climates (not the sunny South coast of England!) Seeing as 10W30 appears t be like rocking horse manure, I'll probably go for the 5W30 Magnatech on offer at Hellfrauds at the mo.

But then there's the 10W40 on offer too?

Which one to go for please?

Cheers, Dave.

The bottom oil is only semi synthetic ..

The top one being fully synthetic is by far the better of the two ...

Hi cavey,

It depends on the mileage and age of the vehicle what oil you use,the book will tell you the oil used when the vehicle was new.Oil is like Whisky, none bad, just some better than others.Unless you intend to take a trip to Alaska 10w 40 is fine.

PS actually Castrol and Comma recommend 10w 40 as one of the grades for this engine.

Cheers.

After reading 10 pages of info about motor oil on this 'Bob is the Oil Guy' website, I came to the conclusion that the best oil to use is a fully synthetic oil that meets the latest quality control specifications (not the old ones specified in your manual, which are just less stringent), and to use the thinnest possible oil that you can without it leaking through the cracks and burning off too fast.

The numbers (e.g. 5W/30) specify the viscosity of the oil when cold and when hot. The 5 indicates that when cold the oil has the viscosity of a cold straight 5 grade oil (a thin grade), and the 30 indicates that when hot it has the viscosity of a hot straight 30 grade oil. A straight 5 grade oil would be too thin when hot, though, and a straight 30 grade oil would be too thick when cold. The additives in the oil try to level out the change in viscosity from cold to hot. It's all explained on the website I mentioned above.

The best oil theoretically, as far as I understand it, would be one that doesn't change viscosity with temperature. The thinner the better, as it flows more freely and cools the engine more effectively, but not too thin that it would leak out. ALL engine oils are thicker when cold than when hot, so in order to protect and lubricate your engine best at start-up (when most engine wear occurs) it makes sense to use a 0W/xx oil as it's thinner when cold than 5W or 10W, but they're more expensive.

In the end I went for a 0W/30 fully synthetic oil (Car Lube Triple R 0W/30) and I've just driven 4500 miles on it without any problems and without losing any oil.
