Wiring issue sparky help plz

Post by spud350 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 5:44 pm

Ok so I'm sure it's simple, but so as I don't nearly set my van on fire again can you look at this and see what I'm doing wrong. Basically I have my speed camera detector, low level alarm and coolant sensors running off the cigarette lighter socket. I have a multi socket affair with 2 wires running off it. I've soldered them onto the back of the lighter socket connectors to power it. All is well.

However I now have a willinton kit so now the ciggy socket will have permanent power to it from the leisure battery so powering the things I don't want, i.e camera detector.

To stop this I want to put a switch in between the cigarette lighter and the multi socket so manually switching them off. Simple? I thought so, but no matter what configaration I put the wires (having tried what I consider the logical ones) the wires go extremly hot very quickly, even though the led light on the multi socket does go on and off when I operate the switch.

Anyone any ideas on the matter?

Cheers Spud.

Yes your putting the switch ACROSS the power and earth leads!
Connect the Earth (left pin on photo) to the -ve/earth wire normally Black.
You will also need to connect the outer -ve/earth together on both sockets.
Connect the +12V connection (right pin on photo) of the switch, to the inner on the single original socket +12v.
Connect the Load connection (centre pin), head light symbol, to the Inner of the new twin socket +12v.

I'm sure I tried this, but this way?

EDIT: the bottom circle should say +ve.

Not a good idea to have a switch in the coolant level alarm circuit.....you can be sure the switch will be OFF when you need the alarm most.....STRONGLY suggest you move the live feed for the alarms to a new "ignition switched live position"

I know what you mean but I doubt it will ever happen as my camera detector and engine temp thingy is also on it. If I knew where a live feed was easily taken I would but don't know.

Does your stereo go off when you turn the ignition off? If so, take a spur off the switched live that goes into the stereo (be aware the stereo will also have a permanent live too)? Regardless of your stereo operation, there will be a switched live in the lead behind it.

If you have moved over all the fuses then you could still take a feed from the TOP contact of the top row right fuse and run-it thru an in-line fuse to the devices. The Willinton wiring loom will be fitted to the LOWER contact but the TOP contact is still supplied from the ACC position of the Ignition switch from the S/B, just ensure that you run it thru a 5 Amp in-line fuse to all the devices that you want to power and get rid of the extra multi connector altogether!
