Leisure Battery Wiring with relay - ciggie working not radio

Post by eppiblue » Tue May 15, 2012 10:34 pm

Hi, I've read so many posts on this and I have figured most of my issue out I just need some confirmation my understanding is correct and the best way to proceed.

The problem:
A couple of years ago I paid an auto electrician to wire up ciggie and stereo to feed from the LB via a split charge relay. I figured out recently that only the ciggie was connected this way, the stereo continues to run direct from the starter battery at all times (yes I found out the hard way).

So what I want is to add the stereo and the blinds to the LB relay (along with the existing ciggie), so that these 3 items all run from the LB when the engine is OFF.

The set up currently is as follows (using the relay numbers and bongo fusebox diagram for reference):

Relay:
87 - brown - to Leisure Battery and ciggie (spliced into the wire)
86 - yellow/green - earth
85 - blue/white - connected to the lower slot of fuse 8 in the cabin fusebox - I assume this is the ignition trigger feed for the relay.
30 - Blue spliced into red/white which is connected to the upper slot of fusebox position 4 - I assume this is the main battery.

The original wiring into 1-5 (white/red) and 6-8 (red/black) appears to be intact.

According to the bongo fusebox sheet, Fuse 8 should be ciggie, mirrors and radio, but in my case I can remove fuse 8 and they all still work - so I am assuming that this is simply now providing the ignition trigger to the relay. I've found the stereo is actually connected to the lower slot of Fuse 1 along with the cabin (lights etc), it must be spliced into the cabin wire somewhere...

This is where my sparky skills cease to exist. I've seen several solutions for non-intrusive patching which look good, but since I already have a 'custom' set up I'm not 100% sure how to proceed.

I have a few photos up on my google+ account - https://plus.google.com/photos/11021624 ... vD-lbnUmQE

If anyone can advise how best I get the stereo and blinds running from that relayed LB when engine is off that would be very helpful, thanks.

You have the same set relay as I used in my set up featured here
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ilit=relay

However its not wired up the same way and does not seam to be used a s a change over relay but a switching relay

I do not understand why you need an ignition feed if its to power the set up from the relay as it will switch off when the keys are removed

now the top parts of the fuses are the feeds from the main battery so 4 is probably a permenent live for the relay from the main battery

The lower pin on fuse 8 is ignition fed but also powers the radio as you said. now by removing the fuse all the things connected to that fuse bottom pin will run off the lb if the lb is connected to it, power to fuses enter via the top and leave via the bottom.
fuse 1 also needs to be connected at the bottom and fuse removed
with the fuse in it may have been drawing power from both the lb and the sb

So just remove fuse 8 and connect the bottom of fuse 1 to the lb and it may work ok.

or better still get a small fuse box and run a feed to it from the lb, from that run 4 wires and attach them to the bottom of fuses 1,6,7,8 and remove the fuses, this will run all you need from the lb and not the starter.

search for willinton kit and there are great instructions as to what is powerd by what or invest in the willinton kit as its all wired up ready and plugs staright in

The radio has TWO +12v power supplies to it!
The first one is un-switched and keeps the memories powered etc. and is supplied via this fuse;

You are best switching over both fuses to the L/B, this will also move a couple of other un-switched items across as well, like Remote door etc.

Hi g8dhe - in my case fuse 8 in only connected to 85 of the relay. Who ever owned the bongo before me has already cannibalised it!

Hi this is just what I need for when I do mine fuses 1,6,7,8. What exactly does this run off the LB.

Cigarette lighter, cabin lights, powered blinds, if fitted, radio, mirrors.

Does that include the ciggie/power socket in the nsr panel?

Was gonna ask this question cos when I tested my connections today the radio would only power up for a couple of seconds then stop. so I need to power up fuse 8 to run the stereo as well. I will try this tommorrow.
