PMS-3U battery charging problem

Post by P-Med » Sat May 12, 2012 10:13 am

I'm currently on holiday in Portugal in my lovely new Bongo. All is going well, except last night the PMS-3U power management system started beeping madly and relays started clicking constantly in the dash. The PMS-3U indicated that both batteries were flat.

Yesterday evening, we parked in the campsite, plugged into the mains straight away and switched on the PMS-3U charger supply. The battery selector switch was in the middle position (between car and van). I left the keys in position 2 or 3 so we could use the stereo (the head unit is powered from the car battery, I imagine, and I wired the subwoofer directly to the leisure battery). We then watched a couple of TV shows - Game of Thrones and Arrested Development, by the way, both EXCELLENT!!! - on a 24", 24 Watt LCD screen, and plugged in the laptop 45 Watt power supply, and went to sleep.

The charger supply was on all night, so I'm wondering why both batteries went flat??? Should I not be leaving the battery selector switch in the middle? Does the charger only charge the battery that is selected by the switch? I had thought that leaving the switch in the middle would ensure that both batteries would be charged.

Thanks for any help.

It could equally mean that neither battery is being charged, as you haven't told the unit which (if any) battery you want it to send power to.

According to the manual : http://www.tonhauser.com/rubbersoul//im ... Manual.pdf, the Off position should isolate all the electrics (water pump, gas ignition, etc) and is the position to select when driving. The Van / Car position will direct the charge to the appropriate battery. Running the stereo for several hours from the main battery is a sure fire way to ensure you won't be going anywhere in the morning :( , so consider wiring it into the LB instead.

This is the unit we have and can confirm the other posts that you do need to flick the selector switch to either car or van for the electric hook up to charge either the starter or leisure battery.
