Occasional coughing and spluttering

Hi, my 2.5 D 2wd beast has an intermittent issue. Well it has a few but this is the question for this issue...
Sometimes when I start her she coughs and splutters as if she's going to stall. And sometimes this is accompanied by a puff of white smoke from the exhaust. I'm running on 30-60% veg oil and have been for about 4 tanks. I have not changed the filters but have them on standby. Do you think the coughing is the fuel filter clogging up or do you think it's glow plugs?
When it happens, sometimes if I turn her off and on again it goes away (making me think plugs).
Other than that she drives faultlessly.
Your thoughts?

i would start with the glowplugs unless you know they are 100 percent

Assuming it runs OK when the engine is warm, 60% veg oil will cause those symptoms until the weather warms up, as the fuel will be too thick to atomise properly - try running on 25% and see if it makes a difference.

I agree. Even on straight diesel, my Bongo engine doesn't like being put under load straight after start-up on a cold damp Morning. These engines weren't intended for running on 60% veg oil, and cold starts in cold weather are asking a lot.

Also check that your coldstart idle is set correctly, if she's set over 950 rpm when she's cold she shut off her glow plugs as she thinks she's being driven

when you start it on a cold morning

you should feel the throttle depress it self as if a ghost has pushed it down

and the engine when it starts will rev much higher than usual

same thing happens when you turn the a/c on

Its summat you can do really easily, just arm yaself with a 10mm spanner then pop the drivers seat, turn the ignition on and you'll see the coldstart solenoid activate the coldstart mechanism, in the end of the mechanism is an adjustment screw locked inplace with a 10mm nut, undo the nut half a turn then wind the adjustment screw out until its level with the end of the mechanism, do your glowplug warm up proceedure and start the vehicle now immediately wind the screw back in until the bongo's revs pick up to around just under 900rpm and tighten the locknut. Easy peasy lemon squeezy
