Another towbar electrics question

Post by SimonT » Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:37 pm

There is a lot of very useful information on here about towbars and fitting them, but I am still a little hazy as to where you actually run the electrics / cables from the towbar socket.

Do you run them under the carpet holder at the rear, or behind the bumper, or is there a void I can use somewhere? Having run along the rear of my Bongo, how do I then access the cables behind the lighting cluster? Is there a hole somewhere, or is there a good place to drill one?

I am fine with the rest, soldering and which cables to use etc, because of all the helpful info on here.
Its only a 7 pin socket.

I am going to use it for a trailer tent, hopefully this summer and hopefully in Cornwall - looking forward to the sun :)

Many thanks in advance

Hi Simon,

There are two grommets underneath the rear of the nearside wheel arch that can be used.

Another good place is the rubber grommet under either of the rear light clusters & it also means the wire comes out by the connectors on the rear of the lamps.

as simon says (no pun intended  ) run the cable along the towbar frame to the offside light, you can pick up most of the connections there, then run a cable from the nearside indicator over to the offside and only your foglight is missing,so locate the wiring for that and your done. I personally always make the connections on the other side of the light grommets so they're effectively inside the car and not exposed to conditions.

In the end I ran a piece of black ribbed conduit (you can buy in B&Q) from one side to the other of the Bong on top of the tow bar. I prefer to run electrics in something, rather than have loose unsecured cables. It sits there quite happily between the bar and the bumper because you have to push it behind the towbar mountings, the spare tyre and the section the towing eye was removed from. I made a small hole for the cable from the electrics to enter from the tow hitch, and used it to run the cable to the tail lamp and indicator on the opposite side.
