Installing clock from Mazda 626 - wiring question

Post by tallbongo » Mon Mar 12, 2012 5:11 pm

I've acquired a clock/cubby hole from a mazda 626 that I wish to install and I could do with some advice on the wiring, regarding the illumination.

It's a 5 wire device. I've identified the GND, ACC and +12V leads.

With power on, the clock functions. Connecting the ACC illuminates the backlight.

There are two more wires, TNS + and -. Connecting TNS+ to 12V causes the backlight to go off. I assume that the combination of TNS + and TNS - was connected to some form of dashboard illumination dimmer and the side/headlights relay.

I'm considering connecting the +12V and ACC to the leisure battery and just putting a pot in series with the backlight bulb to allow a variably illuminated clock while parked up.

I would however be grateful if anyone can explain how the TNS+ and - would normally be wired as I may be able to work a better solution than the one above.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the link. The 1.8 Kohm data is very useful. TNS seems to stand for the Nighttime System and was connected to a dashboard dimmer. I'm pretty sure I can recreate something similar using the data from that thread.
