too much oil and overheating?

Post by stevearmitage » Sun Mar 04, 2012 7:09 am

When i test drove it there were no problems, drove it home after buying (30 miles) and no problem, i then took it maybe 10 miles the next day and the temperature gauge rose quite quickly to full then when i pulled over it cooled down, i think the fan cut in, i then had no problems on the drive untill i drove it back and the same thing happened.

coolant levels are fine, could this be a dodgy thermostat?

So i was giving my newly bought bongo a look over and noticed quite a bit of oil has been seeping through the rocker gasket and looked quite fresh, its not dripping though, when i checked the oil level it was above max, so ive got some fuel air and oil filters on their way with a new sump plug to service it anyway so i can sort the oil level out.

im now not driing it untill i sort the oil level out.

my question is will the rocker gasket need replacing or a moderate amount of seepage ok. ive tried searching the threads and couldnt find an answer but seems its ok as long as its not dripping?

Petrol or diesle

was this a private sale? or dealer

the oil could be just the normal seapage from the egr but the overheating is more worrrying it could be thermostat, waterpump, blocked rad, head gasket or cracked head

if it came from a dealer take it straight back for a refund or fix.

if it was private you need to get it to a bongo friendly garage for a propper diagnosis

You need to give a Bongo a good hours test drive before commiting.
Get it back to the dealer and either.
Get your money back.
Get him to swap it.
Get him to fix it.

The oil level is not cricical so best not to touch that either or he may say you have been messing about and goosed it

Odd that it managed 30 miles one day with no trouble and only 10 the next before overheating. Has it lost coolant? Was the first journey on the move, on open roads, while the second was in stop start traffic. Etc. Answers to these might help pinpoint the cause. Don't drive it until fixed, and fingers crossed the head and gasket are ok.

It was a private sale not dealer, its a 2.5td.
I checked this morning and the coolant level was low so I topped it up, had a friend who's a hobby mechanic give me a hand and he's going to help do the oil change and mentioned that from his experience of head gaskets going that there isn't anything he's seen that would suggest its the head, no creamy build up etc.

Alan from Alansvehicles has got in touch and ill speak to him on tuesday about some trim im after and ill ask about booking it in for a check over.

I've not driven it since I noticed the problem, the 30 mile trip was mainly dual carriage and it started overheating on country lanes with some start stopping.

Sounds like the cooling system isn't working well so that without plenty of air moving through the radiator etc. It can't cope. How low was the coolant level? If the header tank was empty you may have an airlock. Don't drive it until Allan has looked at it. Even though its a private purchase, I would want to phone the vendor and tell them what has happened and to ask if they had had similar problems. They may be willing to help esp. If you paid a good price for it. Hopefully it is a simple problem.

If you put a litre in. it must have been empty ?????? if that is the case ...do NOT drive it anywhere as you will have air in the system

Like I said im not driving it until its sorted, its why I posted in the forum to confirm a problem with the van. I'll speak to alan tomorrow and get it sorted, the header tank was mostly empty. I've been looking at the process of bleeding the system and as I've not done it before, ill get alans advise and probably get him to sort it.

On a good note the coolant tank hasn't dropped in level since topping up, ill do an oil change today to keep me busy and hopefully get it to Alan soon.

Cheers for the help so far, ill keep you posted
