Broken ABS

Post by mr brightside » Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:11 pm

I've been told I need a new ABS pump. I only bought my bongo 4 months ago so it's a bit of a blow. The garage can't find a new pump for less than £800 (reconditioned). Does that sound right?

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure whether it's the right one for my bongo as the part number is different - but it is quite a bit cheaper! The ABS kept coming on every half a mile and causing the gears to disengage, which caused me to stall unless I was going at a reasonable speed.

I may be wrong but dont think the ABS is connected to the gearbox in any way and wouldnt cause it to disengage. It works on wheel speed sensors which pick up serrations/like teeth on the hub. When you brake and these sensors detect the wheel locked up and they will activate the ABS which lets the brake off and applies it again and with the aid of the ABS modulator/pump will do this until you regain traction or stop completely.

I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong.

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a clue about these things. All I know is that the ABS light would come on and the gears disengage. When the garage did a diagnostics check, there was a problem with the ABS but no faults were detected elsewhere.

There is no electrical connection between the ABS system and the ECU, they appear to be totally independent. There is only an input from the Brake light switch, and output to the Dashboard light and two connections to the diagnostic connector outside of the ABS system itself;

Nor does there appear to be any mechanical connection anywhere either http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... 1of02.html

I've spoken again to the garage and they say that the fault is in the ECU, not the ABS itself, but that the ABS and ECU come together - so I need to buy both. Really, its only a new ECU I need. I hope that makes sense to you because it's all a little foggy to me. I have found a company that say they can repair the unit if I send it to them but that repairing it might cost as much as buying a new one, :( and they can't say for sure until I've paid them £80 for a diagnostic. I guess I have to bight the bullet and buy the £800 reconditioned part that the garage have sourced. :(

The diagrams above only apply up to 1999 as we now know that its a 2004 things may have changed of course!
You say that that the garage say the ECU and ABS are one unit ? Which garage is this are they Bongo specialists?
ABS has always been an option ....

The garage is called German Motor Mechanics, in Harrow, and specialise in imported cars. I have no idea if they know what they are talking about. I got them from a google search. There is a Mazda Main Dealer in West London but they were prohibitively expensive. There seems to be an absence of garages that will fix Bongos in West London.

I'm now a bit confused, was it not the ABS Pump that was faulty, and now there saying the pump is OK,and the ECU electronics which they say is combined with the ABS electronics is at fault ?

They told me it was the pump, I think to spare me the details, but after the replies on the forum as asked them again and they said that in fact it was the ECU. They say the two things come as one.

I dont think the ECU and ABS come as one unit, if you need any conformation just PM me and I can give you the number of a former colleague who is parts manager for 2 Mazda dealerships. He will confirm what parts come as what, they wont charge for giving that information. He would even probably fax you any pictures to show your garage. As long as you have your chassis no. and engine no. from the chassis sticker. A diagnostic check wont cost as much as buying un neccessary parts for £800.
