Engine Room Thermosensor open or short P1114

Post by merrlyn » Tue Jan 31, 2012 1:43 pm

Hi,

been having some gearbox issues with my W reg Bongo and was hoping someone may have had a similar issue?

Cold morning I either get drops out of gear as it's about to change up to 2nd with horrible judder to get back in which it repeats until (or it sometimes goes straight to this from cold) straight into limp mode as soon as I engage drive.

When I've driven a mile or two and it's nicely warmed up, simply turning off and back on again, problem gone and runs absolutely fine.

I took it to a local garaged who specialises in auto boxes and he ran his machine testing thingy on it and it came back with 1) Engine room thermosensor short or open and 2) ECT Circuit malfunction, although he did say that fault 2 was probbaly only showing as a result of fault number 1.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, any advice would be greatfully recieved. I went into Mazda with the code and the part name and they looked at me and politely said "never 'erd of one of 'em mate"

please help as supposed to be driving to Gloucester next week and would much rather be driving my van :-(

many advanced thanks,

Merrlyn

sounds like the temp sensor on the side of the head, that sends messages to the ecu then allows the box to change up to top etc, didnt think it afeects the lower gears though, but may be wrong as usual, there is a fact sheet in the members area, this tells how to change the gearshift solenoid pack, in this factsheet there is reference and a picture of A TEMP SENSOR in the box, this may help.

I'll get that one marked on the image soon... it's down below the inlet manifold towards the rear, if I remember correctly.

Hi Matt,

The 2 wire sensor is the one that controls the ecu etc etc.... 18-840c..

The single wire sensor only controls the temp gauge.

Cheers.

no not that one, that is just to the gauge only. there is the main temp sender for the glow plugs etc under and to the left of item 16.

bugger-- beaten to it

I don't suppose it would do any harm gently cleaning the contacts on the connector to the unit...?

Hi again,

thanks for all the replies (and discussions)

Just to be clear . . . (I'm a resonable musician and a certifiably rubbish mechanic) . . . "Item 26" would be the sender which controls the ability to enter top gear when the gear box reaches the right temperature? But would this also be resonsible for the other gear changes as well? . . . I'm now stuck in "L" as my highest gear, with an enormous C L U N K as it moves between that and first, and from what I understand this may be the "speed sender???" It had been running superbly again for a while until I had the to call the friendly AA man to carry both me and my beloved Bongo 2 hours down the motorway back home earlier today

The possible part thrown up bt a test done a little while ago was . . .

" X431 DIAG Report

Total Codes: 002
CODE001:
P1114 ENGINE ROOM
THERMOSENSOR-
OPEN OR SHORT

CODE002:
P0115 ECT-CIRCUIT
MALFUNCTION"

Although the guy testing it seemed to think that the second code was only appearing due to the first.

Oncce again, any suggestions gratefully received.

Sorry to be a pain, but I'm guessing this controls the ability to enter top gear? And you think this is the offending part rather than the speed sensor some people are suggesting?

really grateful for the link

many many thanks will give it a try and let you know if it solves the problem

Several things feed into the ECU including Temperature and RPM (NE sensor from crankshaft), however given that the ECU is saying that the Temp. sensor is faulty that would seem to be the place to start replacing items. Not quite sure why your suggesting that it might be the RPM sensor that is faulty ?

Highly recomended local garage, "Mike Tucker" has done a number of gearbox problems with Bongos and says he's seen quite a few over the years. As the symptoms were dropping out of gear and sticking in other gears plus engine management light at various other times it seemed like the place to start. He read the fault with a code reading machine which then printed out the ticket (information in earlier post)

Clutching at straws really, just want to get it back to reliable and running again :-(
