tappet noise v6
I am getting a tappet noise from 1 tappet when cold
so can I adjustb the tappets on a v6?
Can I reuse the rocker cover gasket?
If no to adjustment what do I do?

Re: tappet noise v6
The V6 uses hydraulic tappets that are 'self adjusting' ... sometimes ... an engine oil change may help ...
JAL Mushroom roof,12/240v, fridge, cooker, sink, LPG V6 .. (written off @ £5500 Nov 2016)
Re: tappet noise v6
They are self adjusting, and a genuine new Mazda tappet on a V6 is not really a cheap part - IF one is faulty, you also have to work out which one is the dodgey one. As Mike said, try an oil change, you could also try an engine flush. Allan uses the Forte products, I don't know which others are suitable.
Allan's closed. in Plymouth we recommend PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services

Re: tappet noise v6
I did an oil change just this Sunday gone and it seamed to sort it a bit at first but its still tappy when cold and for a good 15 min of running.
I my look at an oil flush next if it does not stop it soon
I have never done an oil flush and the tapping is from the other side to the filler so How does that work?
when you say not cheap?

Re: tappet noise v6
Assuming it is a tappet noise, Forte do a flush, and an advanced system protector which is used with the flush, to maintain the valve train system. It might help? http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product.php?id ... _Protector
We were quoted £40 per tappet by our local Mazda main dealer, others may be cheaper? There are 24 tappets.
If you want to try the Forte products but can't get them, give Allan a shout, he's a member of their Good Garage Scheme, so he stocks them.
Or if you're going to the Teignmouth meet, he could listen to the noise for you, to work out just what's causing it, and give you some advice.

Thank you for your replies
When I changed the oil In put stopleake to treat the camshaft seals and stp oil treatment for the tappit
I will see what happens over the next few days and if necessary flush and replace the oil again this weekend.

Hi
Did you ever get a conclusion to this? I seem to have the same problem: i.e. V6 noisy tappets from cold start, gradually quietens down and stops after 10 min or so......did you try any of the oil treatments / additives mentioned and, if so, did they work?
Thanks
Dave

Re: tappet noise v6
My V6 has constant noisey tappets.
I have been assured that this is not doing any damage to the engine (however you ask 10 mechanics this question you will get 10 different answers).
I had a garage carry out an engine flush using a Forte product. This made the noise fractionally quieter and did improve the performance of the engine I feel. I then added a bottle of another Forte product to the petrol tank. This again has improved the performance of the engine.
Sadly I feel I must live with noisey tappets as I am not prepared to spend mega money at the moment.
Good luck

Re: tappet noise v6
I did an oil change and it made it a bit better and added some stop leak and seal additive.
then after a couple of weeks did a good flush and changed the oil and filter again and again added some stop leak which will help the seals as I also was getting some leakage from the cam shaft oil seals.
the ticking has mostly gone just every now and again when cold and the leaks also has reduced so fingers crossed I will do another oil change in a month or 2 if it starts to come back.
if it come back and gets worse I will bite the bullet and get the tappet and seals done best guestamate is around £500 if its the 1 tappet thats changed

Re: tappet noise v6
Hi just wondering if you have had any success with the noisy tappets?
Be careful before forking out on replacing the hydraulic tappets.
We have had some experience with the V6 models and normally the problem can lie with the piston skirts cracking which can sound exactly like a noisy tappet..
Try to get an exact diagnosis before spending your hard earnt cash.
Regards
Mark

Hope you're well. I think our V6 has this same problem, now - straight after a flush and oil change!
Nosing around generally online, Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment seems to work about 50% of the time, and I found a couple of peeps who said that it took about 500 miles of driving before they got a cure. Have put a bottle in, with no result yet at 220 miles. If it's what you used, do you remember how long it took on yours? Don't want to give it too long, just in case there's actually something more serious going on, which I should put the van into the hands of an engine specialist to investigate. Meanwhile, I'm only using the van for local runs.
Got to have it sorted before the camping season starts! Hoping to move down your way this summer by the way, Polden Hills for preference - have been hoping to do so for ages but various family crises have prevented us getting on with it.
Kind regards,
David

Hi
David...
How are you?...not seen you for ages!
Might give that a whirl on the Jeep...sounds like a cement mixer on startup ...the Bongo diesel is quiet in comparison
Cheers

We're both fine, thanks. How's yourself?
Yep, must be a year or so since I last logged in, although I've lurked in the shadows quite a bit whenever I needed techie info. Absence largely due to the aforementioned family crises, and re-setting priorities accordingly.
Wondered at one point, if our van's problem might be early stage piston slap, and in the process of checking that out discovered that Subaru's are notorious for piston slap, as they're built with very short (piston) skirts - flighty or what? http://allwheeldriveauto.com/subaru-piston-slap/ .
A Forester pulled up alongside me on the pumps yesterday, and it sounded as though a blacksmith was trying to repair it from the inside! Must limit the lifespan of old Imprezas in the hands of boy racers, which is perhaps no bad thing. Anyway, just noticed that Bongobits mentioned skirt cracking in V6's - anyone else come across that? Does the V6 have the Subaru problem? Hope not!
If the Wynns doesn't work for the Jeep, how about cement then Helen?
Best wishes,
David

Hi David
We're fine-ish ...eventually succumbed to a Garmin GPS as per our last chat
Anyway...not heard of V6 piston problems????...if you're looking at points southwest for a move, why not combine a house hunt with a trip to Allans down in Plymouth - no better advice...It's a pity we don't have a sound link , but I bet you could post the noise on Youtube for a diagnosis???? I suppose you've checked timing, and sparkplugs?...plugs can often imitate almost any noise.
Regarding the cement....I just might!
Cheers
