Knocking noise, can someone tell me what is in this picture.

Post by etihsbog » Wed Nov 01, 2006 8:06 pm

Thanks for taking the time to read this post, i have a knocking noise which seems to come fom just behind me whilst driving, it generally happens on speed bumps and the like. I have had a look underneath and the only thing in the vacinity is this (please see pictures). It seems to have a lot of play in it and when flicked will give off a knocking noise as it hits the steel bracket. If it is the same noise as I hear whilst driving I dont know. I have looked in the manual but can not find it in any of the diagrams. It is located just behind the gearbox prior to the propshaft, any help is most appreciated.

Hi I have two of these strange rubber block metal frame things. One is on back of gearbox and the other on the reardiff. I posted a query about a year ago and am told they are harmonic dampers and are added to smooth out any vibrations and it is true my Bongo is very smooth. I was going to take them off but in my case they do not knock and do no harm so I regard them as an asset!! Strange you should query today as I think I wiped the pictures off my PC yesterday

Thanks for the reply but can you remember how much play was in them. It could be normal to have this much and my knocking noise could be somewhere else. Think I will cable tie it up at one end to stop it moving for a while to see if this helps

Halo again I think there was no movement they just sit there looking like anti vibration mounting blocks. At first I thought something was suposed to be fixed to them but no. Have you tried the bolts? they should be tight and therefore the blocks dont move. have you got one on the back axle like mine? I think I might still have my photos so if you like I will send an Email to you as I cannot put pics on the site  Derek

Yes i do have another rubber around the rear diff, which has the same amount of play in it. The bolts are tight and the rubber does not actually make contact with the top bracket, there is a gap of approx 5mm, so i am thinking the rubber around the fixing holes might have weakened.

You might find that the rubber has actually torn away fromm the metal. I know nothing about these blocks on the Bongo but have come across harmonic dampers before, a long time ago and as far as I remember they should be bonded. I may be completely wrong in the case of the Bongo of course. Try and ask a mechanic.

Again thanks fo replying Colin. I have just been outside with a torch between my teeth and cable tied one end of the rubber to the bracket and stuffed a rag under the larger gap. I will see how it goes over the next few days, the road on the docks will certainly tell me if this was the problem.

I have been under and checked mine and the metalwork is solidly fixed to gearbox and axle. The rubber will move if pulled about but would not cause a knock.
