stuck oil filter

Hi All,

Happy New Year!

Can anyone recomend a tool for removing a stubben oil filter? i've just pumped out all the oil and now can't get the filter to budge, i've tried sticking a screw driver in it and it still won't turn. I can't put any new oil in it now as i've punctured the filter with the screw driver, so the oil will probably come staright out.

I see Amazon have a few tools that look like may do the job, does anyone know of any other ways to remove an oil filter?

You could make a filter wrench out of a good leather belt or even try wearing marigolds to get extra grip to turn it off by hand, halfords do a filter removal tool but you'll have to wait till tomorrow before you can get one.

Makes interesting reading, as the best under test was well down the price list (£3.75).

(The Wiki also advises "Don't be tempted to punch a screwdriver through it. If it still won't come off and you have punched holes in it you are now immobile")

get one of your wifes best tea towels or similar twist it into a rope once round the filter, this will leave you with a twisted stump to use as a lever, you could push a small screwdriver through the twisted fabric to aid twisting and grip.
then get a large piece of steak for the black eye you recieve from the wife.
dont try to grip the torn filter with gloved hands or you will be attending a+e.

Sticking a screwdriver through them used to be common practice - they seem to be made of thinner metal nowadays though

thats the one i use john, they give nice even pressure all the way around without crushing the filter if you use it on the outer edge.

Thanks All, you guys know yer stuff, i've ordered a Sealey Oil Filter Wrench off tinternet

We'll have to do without the bongo until i get it sorted

Just a thought Rob, as you didn't make it clear. You did punch the screwdriver in one side of the filter and out through the opposite side didn't you? If you went in one side only it is unlikely to turn the filter and will just make the hole bigger as you try turning the screwdriver, sorry if I am teaching granny to suck eggs.

Had one of These for 12 yrs now.... great in tight places and with 3/8 drive it also helps where access is restricted...works well even with wobble bars.... Used it on many different vehicles when the canister doesn't hand undo....

Once you've got it off, when you come to fit the new one smear the seal with a bit of old oil or grease and only use your hands to tighten it as tight as you can do it.

Too many garage gorillas use a tool to tighten filters on, when its not necessary.

Which is why you can't get your filter off
