Rad replaced, with the 'copy' one sold by Ian, and the stat swapped with a gen mazda one.
Both bits swapped over without too much fuss - I attempted the stat from above, but the front bolt was just not happening. Once I'd groveled around underneath and got the tray off it was a doddle.
As an added bonus, I now know I have a very slight fuel leak from the injection pump which I'll have to track down sometime.
I did also buy a waterpump, but ran out of time on the day - and the following day's forecast was hideous, so I wrapped the job up and got coolant back into her so I could at least stay mobile of the weather was as bad as forecast. (It wasn't, in the end...)
I'll get round to doing the pump another day.
Comparing the 2 stats, I can see that one is not a Mazda one, as it doesn't have the wee rubber seal on its nose.

However, they both have "KL01 82°C NIC" stamped on them.
And when testing the old one :

Still closed at 87.4°. can't tell what temp it opened up at, since the digital thermometer I have is all over the place above 80-odd °C.
So, hopefully, I have found a lazy stat which put a bit much strain on the rad.
As for bleeding it, that's another story. Suffice to say - you CAN vac-fill a Bongo and survive to tell the tale (so far!). It took 11L to fill, so I'm happy there can't be much air in there as there are 11L of coolant in there.
