loses power, steering goes stiff and stalls

Post by jess.scobie » Tue Nov 29, 2011 3:48 pm

Hi, my automatic bongo friendee 2.5 diesel seems to have a problem. I will be driving along at around 80-90km/h when my revs and gears drop until the van comes to stop, the steering becomes very stiff, the lights on the dash all come on and then the van stalls. I can't start it straight away but after a few minutes it jerkily starts up. This has happened to me on two occasions, both long journeys and will happen a few times in a row before going on like normal. I have a feeling it could be fuel related but don't know much about engines! It has happened both times when the fuel has a quarter left and once I've filled up then its ok. I have just had it serviced so fuel filters have been changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are leaving to morocco in a week and want to have a sound bongo to start the trip! Thanks, jess

I wish you all the best for the trip!

Re: fuel filter - it would be worth checking the banjo filter in the top of the fuel pump, too.

Hi jess.scobie,

It might be worthwhile checking the Fuel Stop solenoid, could be a faulty solenoid or a bad connection.
You could also check the fuel cap vent.
PS what age is your vehicle?

Cheers.

Does sound like it could be a vacuum developing due to a blocked fuel cap.

look for some recent posts by author simon jones, he came up with a new slant on this old chesnut =D> =D> , theres a little thimble type breather clipped up near the tank on the chassis, this vents the tank, check its operating ok.

Jess,

The same thing happened to me on Saturday on the motorway, and it had just been serviced. Turned out that I had a dodgy fuel filter. Maybe there's a bad batch out there?

Where about in Morocco are you heading for? I'm heading down in 2 weeks time for some surf...can't wait!
