tyre pressure

Post by tezzer22 » Sat Nov 19, 2011 3:03 pm

hi,
my tires seem to be wearing badly on the shoulders but have lots of tread in the middle of the tread , is this down to pressures ? i am currently running at 40 psi , standard alloy wheels and standard size tires

More likely the tracking/wheel alignment. Have this checked.

(40psi is higher than the book values, but many do run higher without apparent problems.)

Also consider replacing the tyres at the same time... depending on how bad the old ones are.

when you say wearing on the shoulders do you mean all four, the fronts only, or inner and outer edges or just the outer edges of the fronts, what make are the tyres.
my mrs has acceleras all round on hers(budget tyre) one front and one back are wearing unevenly across the width.
most odd.
4 wheel aligning, tracking all ok, put it down to crap compound. pressures checked at 40 psi very regularly.
she is a very gentle driver so its not high speed cornering.

Could be any of the suggested.... if all is okay.... tracking etc then wear should be even at 40 psi....

Occasionally..... tyres do "deform" they get a slight "twist" in them, no so as you notice through the steering or any vibration but uneven wear, seen this even on Michelin's (mind you they were narrow profiles)

Start with tracking, double check your pressures with a hand pressure gauge and change for some fresh tyres if they are illegal.

I run 40 psi on summer & winter tyres with no wear issues.... on 17" wheels
