Mileometer or kilometrerometer

Should the milometer in my bongo be measuring distance in miles; cause that is what its doing. I bought the vehicle with 58,000 miles on the clock (ie 90,000 km +). Has it actually done in excess of 90,000 miles. If so, what sort of recourse do I have with the seller.

Apologies if I have missed something simple here, but it does seem a bit odd to me.

Hi Steve,

If the speedo has had a chip fitted this will make the speedo read in miles per hour by converting the signal that the speedo uses. The mileometer has to be reset to the appropriate miles as it will record miles from now on.
A BIMTA check will ascertain the mileage (or rather kilometers)travelled on export from Japan.
If you bought the vehicle privately your rights will differ from the rights that prevail if you buy from a trader. Some sellers, sometimes innocently believe that the sale is private. This may not be so.Ring you local authority Trading Standards dept and talk to them.

Thanks for that. I bought it through a Jap car importer in Southampton. He got it MOT'd and converted etc (for a fee). Is it standard practice that he should have wound the clock back to 58,000 to represent the mileage it has done?(as apposed to 90,000 +, which is what it currently has). My worry now, is that, when I go to sell it, it will look like it has done in excess of 100,000 miles. Not ideal.

Our speedo is in mph, but the odo reads in km.

Easy to check. Drive a known mile or follow another car for a mile.
If your Bongo reads that it has travelled 1.6, then its in km's

If just the speedo face has been replaced the new face will read mph BUT the odometer will still read in Kms. It does look odd but if the MOT cert clearly shows Kms I dont see what the problem is. Just show the MOT when you sell.

If it's been "chipped" the speedo face will read a Max of 180 MPH.

If a new speedo face only has been fitted it will read 120 MPH max.

i dont think that the speedo should have been "wound back" under any circumstances! my bongo has had the speedo chipped,but there was certainly no winding mileages back,it was chipped when showing 63k, is now showing 78 thousand miles,which is correct for the fifteen thousand miles ive put on her in my 3 years of ownership. Its a simple matter of converting the original km's to miles,then adding whatever amount it is over the original to the initial conversion...its harder to explain than to do!

Mine left Japan with 15,000 km recorded, it has been rechipped and now shows about 9,500 miles and the speedo shows up to 180 mph.
So I guess that it is possible to have it completely converted to show mph and total miles.
