Have finally accessed the top of the fuel tank. I intend to clean the spade connections etc. to re-establish a good earth. But: if I want to follow the advise of others on the forum (Dave Edwards, for instance) it seems wise to make another earth connection. Little question: which is the earth connection? Is it one of the three 'spades' on the pull-off connector on the top of the sender unit - or is it somewhere else?
Assistance at this tense hour in the saga of finding and rejuvenating the fuel sender unit would be gratefully received.

If cleaning the spade terninals cures the problem, then leave well alone.
If you really want to add additional earthing then you can't do any harm
by choosing the wrong one. There are only 2 connections used for the
sender, a "to" and a "from" so to speak. If you earth the wrong one, the
gauge will always read Full, if you earth the right one the gauge will read
correctly, assuming you don't have any other problems.
Normally on petrol tanks, the earthing is not provided locally and the
circuit is spike protected to avoid sparks within the fuel tank if the sender
resistor becomes damaged. I don't know if this also applies to the Bongo
diesal tank, but be aware of the implications.
