Where is EGR ?

I have an intermittent loss of power problem on my Bongo, took it out Friday and couldnt get above about 15mph on the flat. Came home took it out again an hour later worked fine same again today with black smoke. From reading forums would seem it might be EGR whatever that is. If I find it how will I know if its faulty and how do I get a new on fitted ? I am not in anyway shape or form mechanical.

Hi Colin,

The first thing(if you have not done it)is clean/replace the fuel filters and air filter.

I won't be the EGR causing that....Have you got a switch with a "engine" symbol on it ??

Yes I have a switch with an engine symbol on the hand book says its the "engine heater" I have used it a couple of times lately due to lumpy starting which I put down to excessive damp conditions. I have not long had glow plugs replaced.

Just to say took van out this morning and apart from lumpy starting went fine.

I understand that a badly constricted inlet manifold due to manky EGR gunk can cause loss of power on acceleration and produce black smoke, though may not explain all your symptoms.

If you're handy with a spanner, are near somone who is or can afford to get the following done, then well worth purchasing:
- rocker cover gasket and bolts;
- inlet manifold gasket (elbow gasket optional);
- EGR blanking plates (if so inclined)
- instant gasket compound

About 40 quid and 4 hours labour to overhaul the intake (perhaps 8 if it's your first time, like mine was). If not the first thing to try, then worth considering. Bear in mind, it will probably be a messy job cleaning out.

Had you done air and fuel filter yet, or is this without any changes?

Lumpy starting could be glowplugs, perhaps starting on 3 cylinders or something. Some of the cheaper ones have been known to go not long after fitting. Just guessing. Others will have more experience.

Edit: if EGR or inlet is badly constricted then my understanding is that, as Haydn alluded to, using the warm-up switch (which effectively blocks off the exhaust) would be a bad thing. I wouldn't drive with it on anyway!

check the torque setting on the top nut of your plugs, if one is loose it can give the symptom of a plug down.
then try removing the bus bar and with an ohm meter test the resistance through the plug to earth,(cannot remember the resistance off the top of my head) but they should all be the same,if one is less its failing or failed.
i would check all the little vac pipes to the cold start solenoids, and the one that runs from the fuel pump to the inlet manifold elbow. and the one at the rear of the head(drivers side) to the cold start solenoids/air pipe to turbo from the air filter housing, and egr solenoids.
