side door central locking not working

Post by Laverda981 » Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:56 pm

I have noticed today that my side door does not lock or unlock using the keyfob. All other doors work fine. The motor on the side door central locking makes a slight noise and the door lock button moves a tiny bit. Door still pulls shut by motor so there is clearly power to the door. I was wondering if this sounds like a simple door lock motor needs replacing? The only thing that worries me is that I fitted side door lights last week as the roof light was removed when the mushroom roof was fitted. I used the wire from the negative side door switch to feed the new lights which all work fine. I am sure that this switch is just for lights and has nothing to do with the side door central locking. Is this correct?

The two unsprung pins in the series of five on the door pillar are the contacts for the CL.. The other 3 sprung contacts are for the "soft closure" on the door.

Did you mean part 66-822 & 66-820 for the negative switch? http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... mgno=.html

In which case yes, that's OK..

You could try cleaning the contacts on the door pins..? (66-6506D in the link.) Especially the two i mentioned earlier, before starting to pull anything apart..?

Also, (This is from memory!) you should get a brief half second'ish 12v pulse from either one of the unsprung CL contacts, (depending on lock or unlock.) that moves the solenoid in the door, using a meter & grounding to the door latch to test... (With the door open!)

If you get a constant 12v from one or both CL pins in the door pillar.? (Which i have seen before after comparing my working system against another owners non working system.) Disconnect the CL power!! The solenoids could burn out under constant load..! In that case it turned out to be the CL relay at fault...

Hope this helps!?
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

The actuating motor in the side door isnt a straight linear motor like most, it sits in a central position and rotates a cam left or right to lock or unlock, these get weak and are unable to move the lock, you might find it will work for once and then die. try locking/unlocking and watching the knob to see if it tries to move a fraction. Replacing the lock is a huge pain in the backside cos its integral part of the whole mechanism.

Thank you to jaylee for the info provided. It was only the negative door switch that I used for my side door lights so I am now confident no harm was done there. I will check the door contacts are clean tonight although from memory all five are clean and operate normally. I will get my multimeter out and check the pins as suggested.

Julian, thanks for your input. I can confirm that the door lock button does move a fraction when the central locking is used. If nothing else works I will take the door card off and check the motor. It is a shame the motor is not linear as that would be cheap and easy to replace.

Dont give up! IT IS possible to actuate just the door knob with a linear actuator, this in turn does stop the outer door handle from opening the the door, but it doesnt isolate the actual latches, technically it does lock and unlock the door and operate as it should.

Re: side door central locking not working & Fiamma skylight.

I have now tested the two non sprung pins as suggested. Both provide a 12v pulse when the keyfob is pressed but luckily no continuous current. I will take the door card off tomorrow and check the motor and linkeages.

I am fitting a 280 Fiamma roof vent to my mushroom roof, wish me luck :D. I have had a small stainless steel frame made to bolt onto the roof around the cut out. This is to strengthen the opening and add to the thickness of the 6mm roof material. I am using marine grade bonding sealant. I am quite confident the finished job will be strong and watertight.

Off to Bridge Farm campsite near Glastonbury for the weekend.

I finally got round to looking at the door lock motor. The linkeage is working fine and lubricated. There is power to the selenoid but it is definitely dead, number is 011226. It looks like a pain to take off.
